ym 146
In desperate need for part number 194800-24220 (or 194800-24221) gasket for a YM 146 transmission. No Longer Available (NLA) from Yanmar. Have one on the shelf collecting dust? Have tried Hoye tractor, Parts Depot already.
Post or call 815-633-2299 ask for Karl or Don. email tractor.town@comcast.net
Thanks

just get a sheet of gasket paper from NAPA and lay it on the case and tap the edges with a hammer. It's how I make all the gaskets for my old tractors

Can you make it possibly? Get some gasket material, as close in makeup and thickness as existing, and the part it fits on. Sit the part on the material on your workbench and smack it repeatedly - hard and carefully with a rubber mallet all around, I usually go around 4 or 5 times to get a full impression. It should leave a good enough impression to cut out with a sharp scalpel. Put a thin coat of a good paintable type of RTV on both sides of the new gasket and install it to spec'd torque. You should be set.
I've often cut and used my own gaskets to save last min trips to parts counters and to finish my projects now instead of having to wait another day.
They work as well if not better than OE. Good luck, KW

Thanks, I am familiar with that technique. This is very intricate gasket. Many twists turns and passages. As it goes into the center of the transmission putting all back together and then having it drip would be an expensive redo. So if I could find the actual gasket I would have more piece of mind. Thanks again for responding, that was very nice.

i'd have to agree.

IF they truly are NLA.. and you can't find one... you either have to make one.. or turn the tractor into parts.

I'd opt for making one. I make plety of gaskets.. including carb gaskets.

just take your time, and use an appropriate sealer if needed.

for complex bends you can sectionthe gasket and shave/feather the ends and use gasket sealers to join up.

The more intricate, the more time you need to spend cutting it. Have an arsenal of SHARP scalpels to help make the task easier. I always use Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket liquid sealer even when not called for, just apply super thin and let sit a couple min before installing then let the rebuilt trans sit overnight before use to let the sealer cure. Over 35 yrs ago, when I first started making my own gaskets, I had 1 or 2 leaks but since then I've never had a problem. Hope you can find a new gasket somewhere but if you don't you'll still need to use your ym some day - I see no other alternative unless you get someone else to make it for you, and I'd certainly trust myself to get it right more than another. Just my humble opinion.
Good luck in whatever avenue you pursue.... KW
