Yanmar 186D
MikeinPA moved my post about hearing protection over to safety. I realized in my mind I was trying to talk about my experiance using my Yanmar. I should have said I have some hearing loss so I usually wear ear plugs but the other day I forgot to put them on/in and I realized that I could hear the 186D better. I was mowing tall grass and weeds with the bush hog. Because I could hear the rig better I was using the powershift to keep it cutting smoothly as I went from thin weeds to thick grass and back. I was mowing in secone range/third gear. As it started to bog down I would pop it down a gear and when we were through the thick stuff pop it back up a gear. It really worked well. Somtimes I wonder if I wouldn't get along just as well with a gear shift but that time I was glad to have powershift. Now I have to see if I pay attention when I use the ear plugs if I can hear the tractor well enough to keep it cutting smoothly using powershift.

I have found the very same thing when mowing with my 186D, I found that it let me mow much faster, because I could downshift so quickly.

Sorry about your hearing, I have lost some, and also try to be careful to hang on to what I've got...

I use my powershift as you described and to "downshift" for rough ground and tricky corners. It is really handy, Icould live without it but am glad I don't have to.

Since you specifically meantion bush hogging with a YM186D - how big a bush hog do you use? I have a friend with a YM1500D, and an F15D, and would like to use either to bush hog. He has found a 5' bush hog, but I'm afraid that might be a bit too large for this size tractor. The YM1500D and F15D are the same hp as the YM1510D, and I think the YM1510D is very close to the YM186.

Is a 5' bush hog too much for a YM1500D or an F15D?

That would definately be a case of the tail wagging the dog. They need to stay with a 4ft bush hog.

I am running a 4 foot King Kutter. 4 foot is about right but I definitly wouldn't want anything larger or heavier. I have something like 150 lbs of steel slabs bolted to the front bumper. If you click on a members blue name you will get to the members profile sometimes they will have a list of the implements they are using.

Chris,
Thanks for the info. It is as I thought - a 5ft bush hog is probably too much for a tractor of this size (YM15xx, F15)

Sorry I do not agree. I have a 5 ft King Kutter finish mower on the back of my YM1510D and it works GGGGGREAT. Dont cut your self short.

Actually you aren't disagreeing either. We were talking about Bush hogs/rotary cutters, not finish mowers. King Kutter also makes rotary cutters. A YM15XX will handle a 5ft finish mower but a 5ft hog is too much.

Brent is right, big difference between finish and ruff cut. King Kutter will tell you that the smallest PTO hp they recommend is 25 on a 5' ruff cut. That is not because a 1500 doesn’t have the power it is because the shear pin on the mower is bigger and stronger than the PTO gears. I fix a lot of broken PTO housings/gears because of that. Remember the sooner you get the job done on the tractor the sooner you have to go into the house and nothing good can come of that, hehe. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

I have never broken a shear bolt but I have stalled the engine out more than once. Maybe I need some grade 0 shear pins./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Don't laugh, but I use aluminum shear hardware. Havn't experienced any real problems doing it that way.
I don't mind buying a 5$ box of aluminum bolts, and replacing them 1.5 times as fast as steel... but it has got to be easier on the pto ...
