I turned my tractor off at one of my gates the other day to unlock the gate. When I tried to start it back up it wouldn't do anything. I thought for a minute, then tried the lights they came on bright. I took a screwdriver and jump it across the solenoid post and it cranked ok. When I got back to my place I tried the key again, it wouldn't do anything. I jumped it off with a screwdriver again. The bendicks whined a couple of times then kicked in and spun the starter and it cranked. Bad solenoid right. I stopped by a tractor place that deals with yanmars, he told me to pull the starter off and bring to him. He would check the starter out, new brushes if needed and check the solenoid. Should I just replace the solenoid or take it off and have it checked? It hasn't given me any problems until now. Comments are welcome. THANKS:confused:

Gary,

IMHO more often than not the starter is usually good but the contacts, cables and/or battery connections are the culprit.

Just yesterday I had the same problem (jumping it off via the starter contacts), examined the battery and removed the cables. They looked clean and perfect but upon closer inspection there was swelling under the negative cable insulation and was badly corroded...something you wouldn't normally see. I lobbed off 3/4" re-soldered the end and put it back together. Tractor started fist lick, every time for the rest of the day. I would at least check all of the contacts before my starter goes to the re-builder.

Gary,

I had the same problem on my YM2620D. The leaking fuel lines above had gotten into the total unit and made a mess. A total rebuild and the new "special size" solenoid fixed the unit right up.

I think Mark's attack on the problem is good. If that does not show any results then pull the complete starter and take it to a good rebuild shop. I think I sent about $85. for all the work and parts.

Keep us informed as to the findings and results.

The solenoid is the most likely cause but don't overlook checking the ignition switch before you start tearing things apart. Try jumping across the + and Start terminals on the back of the switch. Also check the wiring, and the clutch safety lockout switch, if there is one.

Hoye and several others sell the switches.

Do these models have a safety switch in association with the clutch peddle?

Some do, and it really should for safety's sake.........another good thing (and easy) to check

ALL UTDA certified tractors have a clutch safety start switch. If a model doesn't have one, or it isn't working, it gets a new one or gets fixed before it can be certified. It's part of our committment to the customer's safety.

Thanks guys; I had the clutch pushed in when I jumped the solenoid so I thinking that if the clutch safety switch wad bad that the tractor still shouldn't have started. I will have to check the ignition switch plus all the other ideas and will get back to yall. Thanks

Thanks California; Yes, My tractor has a clutch safety switch. I had a large pair of channel locks holding the button in on it. With the key turned on and the clutch safety switch engaged. If I jump the solenoid posts, and the tractor cranks, wouldn' that tell me that the clutch safety switch is good? Otherwise it would not crank, it wouldn't turn over or nothing. Do yall agree with that? Thanks again
