I am considering buying a Yanmar 2200 Refurb unit. Mainly because of cost. It will be used for light duty on a Golf Course and I would like some Feedback from the group on what to look-out for and what questions to ask the Dealer/Feedstore.
They have offered a 3 Month Warranty.
Thanks from Texas

Older unit among the grey machines. Personally far prefer the 2210. Search this forum and you can find several hours worth of reading about "recons"....typically meaning "reconditioned" units from viet nam.

Some people have recons with good experience. Dealers who don't sell recoms report lots of parts requests from dissatisfied customers. Some recon dealers may stand behind the machines, others, it is a parts only warranty from a unit they have on the lot (i.e. cannabilize another tractor for some part that might fit--if they have it). Dealers here state a much higher problem rate with the recons than the direct from Japan with minor maintenance models.

Maybe it is "you get what you pay for". Certainly if the unit works well--it can do what you want. I don't know how easy it is to get parts for.

I would look elsewhere, especially since is an older 2200.

Thanks,

I second the 2210. I have always said that the 2210 is the most bang for the buck. If I were getting a 2cyl, it would be a YM2210.

I've had my "reconditioned" 2200 for about a year now, and I like it. Used it for about 160 hours with a six foot finishing mower and 40 hours with a combination of a subsoiler, 4 foot bushhog, and 4 foot box blade to clear land. It has given me no problems, but I had to replace the stearing gear box and redo some of the wiring after I first bought it. Parts for this model are often hard to obtain, and some are just not available. I would not recommend it unless you are mechanically inclined.

Thanks for your comments. This will be my 1st Tractor and I believe I will look at other options. When the price is too good to be true.......I am going to look at a 26 hp Mitsubishi on Friday with 790 hours. Is this better than Yanmar?

It all depends on what the definition of refurbished is. I have done what I consider refurbishments on Yanmars. What did I do? New battery, fluids and filters, new seat or seat cover, replaced wheel bearings, a little touch up painting here and there. That is what I usually have to do to a tractor with say an average of 700 to 800 hours. The engines are not worn out so I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would need to completely tear down one of these tractors and do a major overhaul of one unless; A. The tractor was a piece of crap to begin with, or. B. The tractor got a shiney new paint job and a new hour meter installed and they just say it was completely refurbished.

The 2200 is not a bad tractor. It is an older model, parts are not as readily available as the 2210, but the 2200 is a heavy work horse. I sold one to a friend of mine about 5 years ago. He has had absolutely no problems out of it in that time. One thing about the 2200 is the wheels on the are dished pretty deep and if you turn them around coupled with the extendable front axle you will have a tractor that is almost as wide as it is long. Looks like a slope mowing tractor.

Good heavens, no. Not in terms of parts availability. Or quality.

More info: I will be using this on a Golf Course and will put 300 hours a year on it. I need something dependable that will last for at least 5 years. The Golf Course duty will be a running a Leaf Blower and pulling a roller to flaten out "rough spots". I travel extensively and will not have time to hunt parts and make repairs.
Since you guys forgot more than I know about Tractors, what Tractor would you buy ? Do you think the Mitsubishi is a grey market unit?

You may be better off staying woth a Yanmar unit as far as parts go. Try looking for a YM2210/2020. The YM2000 may do all you need it to and they are very reliable and parts are available. There are a few Yanmar dealers in TX, look around.

He probably isn't too far from Hoye. They have been super to deal with.

Without knowing the model number it is impossible to say, but I would probably say yes it is. I would bet there are more grey Mitsu's in the US than those built for this market. My dad has a MT2201 and has had it for about 7 or 8 years. In that time the only thing that has broke has been a roll pin in the main shifter. It was a real pain and about 3 hours to replace that 33 cent part! Even with his success and rock solid Mitsubishi, I would still go with Yanmar for parts accessibility.

"I travel extensively and will not have time to hunt parts and make repairs."

That being the case, unless you are near a servicing, authorized Yanmar parts dealer, I don't believe I would consider a Yanmar or anything that can't be serviced nearby. It seems that most tractor dealers only service what they sell.

300 hrs x 5 years = 1500 hrs. He wants a $3500.00 tractor and has no time to make repairs. Good luck with that!!! His best bet would be a yanmar though!!!! Hope he has the time to do maintenance!!!!

There is a staff at course that takes very good care of the equipment, they just can't spend their time looking for odd ball parts. They perform daily maintenance and change oil and fluids often. They need to be able to call up a Dealer and say we need a _____and order it. Does that help.
I am the one that travels....

Based on your requirements, outside of initial cost, I'm not sure any of the "grey market" tractors are what you want. IIRC even getting turf tires for some of the greys can be problematic. I would suggest that you go to your local dealers and look to see what they have on their used lots. Personally, I would suggest that you look at old Fords and JDeeres. There is plenty of support for both and your mechanics should have very little trouble being able to track down parts. I know for the Fords that basic parts can even usually be sourced from auto-parts places and TSC.
