Still trying to decide on a new one. What do i gain between the 310 and the 360? The lower price appeals, but is it worth it? My property is not very hilly, not too large, easy to cut. iI want to get a snow blower also.

I would get the X310 based on where you will be mowing.

For the price (extra 1300 msrp) you get 3.5 extra hp, 2" taller tires, a low fuel light, tilt wheel, 6"wider deck with 90 degree rotatable wheels with 3 more positions on the settings of the deck wheels, both use the K58 transaxle, 44" blower and same other tools.

Having read both of your threads I would suggest the x310, less cost and good enough for a smaller yard. I can only assume you have gone through the whole tractor experience with your prior farm so you are not trying to buy a tractor. An x310 with the smaller deck might be easier to mount and dismount later on. Definitely takes less room to park if the shed is small.

A couple of times a year you may need your son's help with blades and attachment swaps, good excuse for a little time to talk and visit.

How easy is it to remove the mower deck on the 310? The 54' Deck on my 345 just rolled out to the side, which was very easy. Do the wheels rotate on the smaller decks?

The anti-scalp wheels don't rotate but the deck is fairly light and maneuvereable.

Buy bigger than what is needed for a job.

The one thing I wished I had considered prior to purchasing the x320 4 years ago was that the k58 tuff torq transmission is not owner serviceable, not sure if this applies to the models you are considering. Have driven it up and down bill hills on 2+ acres for 180 hours, and it has slowed down, ultimately suggesting the transmission need to be serviced, after replacing belts, verifying linkage, etc. My options include having the dealer do it, or follow various work around posted in the forums to enable me to chnage the trans fluid. I would personally not buy another machine that did not allow this basic maintenance feature out of the box. Hope it helps.

On a K58, the fluid and filter can be owner serviced.

What other services are you looking to do? Just curious.

mikepa,

The x320 manual I have indicates no such owner serviceability for my k58 in the 2010 x320, it is a "sealed unit". See here http://www.mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=55915 and here TractorData.com John Deere X320 tractor transmission information and particularly here http://www.mytractorforum.com/archive/index.php/t-179552.html (very similar to what I have experienced in terms of degraded performance over time).

There is no fill tube, and no drain plug, only a breather vent that some have used to drain and fill the unit, after taking it out and tipping it on its side to extract the fluid. The major difference with the x320 and x500 line is the k72 tranny does have a drain plug and fill tube.

JD using a transmission that is sealed and does not allow the normal owner replacement of fluid out of the box is a fundamental flaw. Fluids degrade with use over time and transmission component wear and eventual failure is likely at some point without the ability to replace the fluid.

Thx
