Is the 500 AWS? do I want AWS? I heard the tractors feel kind of weird while driving when they have AWS!

I love AWS. Great for snow plowin!

Really AWS helps with snow plowing? I would have never guessed that. Why?

The traction of the rear tires stays in a direct line with the direction of travel. Many folks say it is much better on slopes for the same reason. Giddyup, do you think it is better on slopes too?

So do they even need to be 4x4 if the terrain is not too sloped and we don't get snow too often?

Actually, the direction of travel depends on your reference. The line of the tires create the direction of travel. In a left turn for example, the front turns left and the rear turns right. It essentially changes the pivot point closer towards the middle of the tractor rather than from a point about the rear axle. See the attached picture.

So far, I love my AWS, AWD tractor!

AWS works great for snow removal and bucket work - JB Sr. bucket work that is. Because the rear wheels steer, it helps steer the tractor when the front wheels loose traction. But hold on....anyone who has plowed snow or other materials with a 4X4 backhoe or tractor, knows that the front wheels are useless a lot of the time and the only way to steer effectively is by using the turning brakes. I found that once i put on a set of v-bar tire chains it turned my Deere into a totally different beast for the winter.

Have you considered a slightly used CUT since you mentioned a loader?

I've been looking at them, AWS kind pulled me to the X series.

From what I understand, you cannot put a front end loader on the four wheel steer versions. Not sure why.

There was a thread a while back about this very same issue.
If I remember correctly the guy had to give up 0n getting the x 534 AWS because he wanted a loader and a loader won't work on the X534.
== L B ==
*I'd say cause AWS would put the loader in a twist resulting in to much strain on the loader arms.

Well isn't that something. I guess now its between a sub compact tractor or an AWS mower. I really wonder which will be best. I don't mind long mowing times as long as its comfortable, my current mower is so uncomfortable I can't sit on it for more than an hour, thankfully I don't have to.

Don't know much about the new generation Cubs the older gear tractors were rock solid performers. Lots of them still around on Estates here in the South.

What should I be looking at when choosing between one of the X series mowers? I am looking at x300s and x500s probably, but I am not certain of what the main differences are other than price.
Thanks,
