What should I be looking at when choosing between one of the X series mowers? I am looking at x300s and x500s probably, but I am not certain of what the main differences are other than price.
Thanks,

500's are more of a garden tractor, but not as much a garden tractor as the 700's. 300's are straight up lawn tractors

So which one would be better for the price for a 3 acre lot, gravel drive way. I intend on adding attachments like lawn aerators, seed spreaders, etc.

You'll most likely want a larger deck and perhaps some attachements (like a tiller) in the future. X300 series does not offer a liquid cooled engine; a "must" IMHO for engine longevity.

I'd be looking at the x520 or x540 if I were you. You start getting into the x700 series and you would be better off getting into a sub-CUT (price/feature wise).

Good luck!

Scott

PS - take a peek at deere's website - they lay out the specs for each model along with MSRP.

Hain't that the truth.
I just bought 2 Sub Compacts for about the price of an x749.

I think we get it by now! Or do you plan another 500 posts saying the same thing?

That's sort of right on the line IMO, and I would always err on the side of heavier duty equipment. My Mother recently purchased a 540, and when seen side by side the the 3xx series, the 540 is a lot more tractor. Primary factors that led us to the 540 were the liquid cooled engine, hydraulic implement lift, and the heavier transmission and frame. She uses the 47" snowthrower all winter on a sloped driveway, so maybe if she were just mowing and nothing else the 3 series would have done it, but her yard is primarily sloped as well and the 5 series just seemed more stable.

I'd be crowin' too -- from the tops of the trees after scorin' on the deal with the BX!?

But... you can get TOO SMUG about it, too!

And the OP wants some advice on a good deal on a X series, huh?

I have to answer a question with some questions.

How long do you want to spend mowing? Consider deck size and HP.

How long do you expect the equipment to last? Consider air cooling vs. liquid cooling. Although a well maintained air cooled engine with approved synthetic oil can last the average homeowner for 10-20 years.

I recommend buying a bigger heavier duty unit that can easily do a job rather than a smaller unit which might be taxed a bit to push snow or something.

Does the 3xx series still use bushings instead of bearings in the front? The 3xx series is made more for the residential owner that does not mow more than a small lot and is the definition of entry level IMO. The 5xx series will have the longevity you would want and the ability for all the attachements that you listed. For my old property I had a 595, which is now the 7xx series, and that was a heck of a garden tractor. I only got rid of it because on my new property I needed more tractor. If you could swing it, the 5xx is the best bang for your buck.

The 5xx won't let me have a front loader, will it?

Thats the only thing that makes me want to get a CUT, plus I got to see a few up close at the garden show this week and now I really want one, only if they were half the price.....

If CUTs were half the price, most seem to be at least 12K with a front loader and belly mowing deck, if they were 6K it would be much easier for me to make a decision :)

JD does make a johnny bucket for the 500 series now. it only lifts about a foot off the ground, but it'll serve most homeowners purposes

Nice to know, that may solve all my problems.

Is the 500 AWS? do I want AWS? I heard the tractors feel kind of weird while driving when they have AWS!

There is one model in each X series (300, 500, 700) that has all wheel steering. In the 500 series, I believe that it is the X534. All the other models (X500, X520, X540) have two wheel steering.
