Wrong House picked for Home Invasion

We live at the end of a road and we own a good portion of the road. There is a gate with No Trespassing signs where we own both sides of the road.

On day, the wifey left the house sorta early in the morning for a short trip and left the gate open. On the way out, she noticed that there was a strange minivan in the neighbor hood that had just left a neighbor's house and was heading towards our house...

Sure enough, a short time later, the Caravan pulls up to the house after passing through the gate, first clue and two No Trespass signs, clue two and three, that they should not enter.

The vans stops and has three people inside, two women and a man who is driving. A woman gets out of the back of the van, and leaves the door open. The engine is not turned off. The woman has a spray bottle in her hand. Now, I am sure many people would not have even noticed the spray bottle much less realized it was a weapon. But ya know, I a guess I am just a paranoid sort or maybe I do have a clue. :D

The woman walks up to the door but before she knocks I cracked a window. Now that may seem odd but our front door has a fair amount of glass and I can see her and she can see me. She really does not want me to open the door because my dog is NOT happy with this woman. If one understands Dog Talk, it was very obvious that my dog did NOT want this woman on the porch and did not like the woman at all. I have only seen my dog react one other time like this and that was when a meter reader walked up to within a foot or less, behind my wife's back, while she was bent over getting something out of a car. The meter reader scared the scat out of my wife, the dog saw my wife's reaction and the dog responded to protect a member of her pack. The lady on the porch had not surprised me but my dog did not like the woman at all. Hmmmmm..... The dog is pretty smart...

So the woman sees me and a dog who is most unhappy at her presence on the porch. Now, I was not going to open the door because I did not want the dog to get out but also because the woman had a weapon in her hand. The threat of the weapon was easy to deal with by cracking a window and having a chat. She was "selling" house cleaner. Really? Sure you are. The chat went rather one way at that point and I mentioned trespassing, sheriff, etc, and she quickly scurried back to the van and left. The wife was returning when she saw them leave the neighborhood.

The woman could have been running a scam trying to "sell" cleaner that cost a couple of dollars for $5-10, they could have been scouting out houses to rob later, or to blitz at that moment. The house cleaner easily would have blinded a dog or a person.

There have been many home invasions in nearby counties over the years. Often they are drug related and/or the people know each other. But many of them are home invasions where the victims did not know the criminals. A year or so ago a couple of men were kicking in doors in Raleigh and robbing people they had picked at random. Eventually, they added rape and attempted murder to their repertoire. One husband ended up crippled after trying to fight off the men who were raping his wife.

So how many of you "prepared for anything" strap a fire extinguisher to your hip and throw on a life jacket everyday? Hard hat? I mean, you never know right? I ALWAYS wear safety shoes! You have to take the initiative and be responsible for your own safety right?
Don't fool yourself, it's totally about fear and imagining your a hero in some fantasy scenario.

Dropped out some time ago, not much else to add, but I've carried a gun most of my adult life some because of my job and some not. I do know people who have shot and been shot. I believe most of us pro carry people realize that there are no "heroes" in a gun fight or use of lethal force. No matter how it turns out, it will be one of, if not the worse day of your life.

Can you or anyone tell me why, in God's name, the NRA doesn't come out and publicly condemn these mass shootings? Why, after the UCSB shooting (my alma mater) didn't someone from the gun lobby come out and say that things have gotten out of hand and we need to do more to make sure guns don't end up in the hands of the mentally ill? That increased scrutiny, more intensive background checks, medical background checks might be needed? Instead, the NRA seems to always double-down following one of these tragedies and say what we need are more guns. It's simply stupid and they aren't representing responsible gun owners very well.

It's my understanding that in order to use a gun effectively in an emergent situation, one needs to train and continue to train with those scenarios in mind. I highly doubt that a homeowner with a gun in their pocket opening the door will stand a chance of getting the weapon out, leveling it and firing at their target as the aggressor pushes the door in swarms and attacks the homeowner. Multiply that doubt by 10 if the gun/homeowner is over 60 years old. The only way one would have a chance is if the gun was out and leveled at the Fuller Brush Man or the Avon Lady when the door was opened. As was said before, after a few friends are greeted this way, the friends will stop coming around.

It's obvious you are not an NRA member, otherwise you would know that the NRA supports any EFFECTIVE legislation to prevent or minimize gun crime. Unfortunately, grandstanding politicians immediately propose nonsensical firearms restrictions that they themselves admit would not have prevented the incident in question (see New York State and Connecticut). Sadly, many hours and dollars must be expended to protect law-abiding gun owners from such ridiculous attempts. NRA also conducts extensive training for law enforcement personnel, and offers gun safety classes free to anyone who requests them. Sadly, most anti-gun lunatics that run the public school systems reject these programs out of hand.

No, you just are not prepared. It is not about fear but being prepared.

I wear my seat belt on the tractor because it minimizes risk. As I do in my truck. I wear safety chaps, helmet with face and ear protection, eye protection and gloves when running the chainsaw. When using my kayak I wear a PFD. The PFD has a strobe, whistle aka noise producing device, running light, and a knife. I have a water proof flashlight as well. I do not kayak at night so I did not legally need lights but I have them anyway. The kayak has wool clothes in a dry bag along with matches and a firstaid kit. I do not kayak in cold water or cold seasons but having warm, dry clothes is prudent. What does it cost me to carry the clothes? Nothing. My truck and house have fire extinguishers. The tractor's expired and I need a new one. A guy I know had his tractor catch on fire, sounds like it was the battery, and even though he was close by when the tractor caught on fire, a fire extinguisher would not have put on the fire. :(

I carry a CPR mask to and from work just because.

I was just chaperoned a school trip that included a rafting trip, and of course, everyone was required to wear a helmet and PFD. The guides had safety gear and first aide kits including an AED. A few weeks ago, we were in WA and we took a short trip on a really nice boat that is incredibly seaworthy with many boats in the class having crossed oceans and survived hurricanes. Unlike similar boats, the boat has very high lifelines/hand rails, yet the wife and I wore inflatable PFDs while on deck. The chances of us falling overboard was close to zero, but if we did, survival time in the cold water would not have been long. Cost of protection for minimal risk was nothing, penalty for very unlike event of falling overboard, was severe.

Some people understand risk and how to minimize it. Others do not. It is not about being afraid, it is about being prepared.

I joined NRA after reading their response to the Sandy Hook killings. Here is the Washington Post's version of the transcript Remarks from the NRA press conference on Sandy Hook school shooting, delivered on Dec. 21, 2012 (Transcript) - The Washington Post
For anyone who has only heard the media interpretation, try reading this with an open mind. If you can't do that, then skip down to former Rep Asa Hutchinson's remarks.

Me thinks thee doth protest too much... Don't try and hide your fear in an obtuse attack on my peacefulness. Hero?, maybe, to the innocent bystanders who still have the gift of air in their lungs.
