Knowing that, you just haven't had a truck with the right gas engine and rear gearing.

Sid
Not entirely accurate there. Never pulled a trailer over 6k dry and used everything from 350gm engines to current 4.7 5oy. All had 3.73 gears or higher, mostly higher, as in current 3.90 and las GMC had 4.10. No desire to go lower since gas mileage got horrible anyway.

Have settled on either an 06 or 07 GM Duramax/Allison, for a number of reasones.

My only remaining question is was any significant improvements made to the trucks themselves between 06 and 07? Referring to GM's only. Thanks sooooo much for the help here so far. Been a real education

Based on what you said, you were certainly using the wrong gassers. 6K is absolutely nothing today for even a moderately equipped gasser, not even a HD or max tow...I pulled hills in the PA mountains with 8k dry going 50 MPH driving like an adult, meaning not even close to using all HP available. Not trying to change your mind, just sayin'.

I agree. I pull 9700 with my Titan and through the Smoky Mountains in 95 deg August heat it never drops below 65 mph and never turns more than 3500 rpm.

Well I forgot to mention the 68 Chevy I had with the 396 that would pull a house off its foundation, but it also got 10 mpg loaded or not, and THAT was one of my original reasons in my first post for going diesel. For what its worth, the 07 trucks were out when I bought my 06 Tundra. Not flaming anyone or their choice, but I didnt like the 07 Tundra or Titan. Personal preferences. I knew then they were both more powerful than mine, but was my choice.

All that said, I still want diesel. So that is settled. Seems if I had said I wanted a white truck someone would say I should consider black instead. For a few more years we still have freedom of choice in America, and I choose diesel. A used one at that, why? Cause I was forced to retire at age 56 because Congress deemed 57 too old to control air traffic but not too old to screw the country up.

So while I am still allowed SOME freedoms I will choose to drive a diesel, cause I WANT to and I can! Also because since Congress took away my choice of working or not, I cannot afford a new 60k truck. Nor does anyone want to hire a (now) 60 year old man. Thats why I cant afford a new one. Try living on 55% of your pay.

My current truck is paid for and has been since new, and I cannot take on a pmt for a new one. Sooooo, if I am getting a truck that will most likely be my last, I want it to last, and do all I might ask or need from it, including pull a bigger, trailer if I am lucky enough to figure out a way to get one.

Sorry for the rant, but I have enough experience behind the wheel to know what I want and why.

Now back to my posted question.

Was there a significant difference between the 06 and 07 GM trucks, other than body style? Thanks

GM made some 07 "Classic" models before January of 07 and they are the more desirable units with upgraded transfer case pump and no particulate filter. If in doubt about the transfer case, look at the bolts holding the case halves together. The new transfer case has 12 or 13 mm heads and the problem transfer case has 15 or 17 mm heads.

By classic, did it have the old body style? Never heard of that one. Good tip on the TCase bolts.

Good to know, but I bet they are hard to come by too.

My neighbors just sold their 2007 3500 SRW 4x4 Dmax. It was the classic body, LBZ motor, crew cab.
