worn out BX deck wheels

You can call me cheap if you want. Faced with replacing all 4 deck wheels because the bore was worn out. I started looking for alternatives to spending 80 to 100 dollars for 4 cheap plastic wheels. I happened to have a short piece of 3/4" PEX tubing and when I checked it fit the shoulder on the bolt almost perfectly so I bored the holes in the wheels to 3/4" and had to tap the pex in with a hammer. When the pex wears out I can simply replace it until the outside of the wheels wear out.

Good idea and agree the price of these el-cheapo plastic wheels are way over-priced.

There was a guy on this forum a few years back that sold these wheels with a steel insert.

When I had by BX22, I wore out a set of wheels pretty fast. I did not realise they should almost never contact the ground when mowing. They should only touch on occasion if mowing uneven ground to avoid scalping. After I made the adjustment, the next set was on for 5 years before I sold it and I think are still on today. ( sold 5 years ago ) .

Point to remember, they are scalp wheels... not height wheels.

My method cost me 1/2 hour of my time and some scrap PEX tubing. I just bought the machine last fall and they were already worn out when I got it. I keep the wheels set 1/2 inch off the ground as my manual suggests so I figure I should be good for several years.
