Tiller Working Depth on PTO driven rotary tillers - Larry

I don't think a 6' tiller would be too much for his 55 HP tractor. My old 45 horse (37 PTO HP) handled my 5' L.P. tiller with plenty of power and traction to spare, even in an old hay field that hadn't been worked up for 20+ years. Speed and feed, machinists terms, (PTO tiller RPMs and slow steady forward movement of the tractor) is the key.

The PTO is doing the real work. It's not the same as pulling a two or three bottom plow where the whole tractor is doing the work which depends upon the weight of the tractor and wheel traction.

Just two passed, one pass in one direction followed by one pass in the opposite direction and the old sod ground was ready for planting. ;)
