Workbench!

I want a heavy duty workbench for my garage. I haven't found anything that looks very good at HD, Lowes etc. Any suggestions? I wouldn't mind trying to build one if I had good EASY plans - I'm the original " Cut it 3 times - and it's still too short " carpenter!

Strong and easy..... I have built them out of butcher block tops and 3" black pipe. Use flanges to attach the pipe to the floor and underside of the work bench. You get about 1/2" adjustment in each to level out the bench. I would go mo more then 4' im between pipe legs if you want i can send you a sketch. Woodcraft usually has 24" x 6' tops on sale at a good price. Run a few 5/4 x 4 stringers perpendicular to the grain of the top and countersink screws every 6 to 8" to keep it from cupping. It will be strong and heavy

It eliminates the most difficult part--getting all of the legs the same height:laughing:.

I made a 4 x 8 bench/island for my shop. I used 2x4s for the frames and 4x8 sheets plywood for the decks.

It is very sturdy.

I built mine into the posts of my pole barn, and then put an old gym floor that I got for free as the top. Sanded it, then stained and put a couple coats of poly on it. It is sturdy, I pounded out u-joints last summer from the boat drive shaft and it didn't break.

Mine is 2 x 4 material on edge with threaded rod and holding it together...

It takes a pounding at times and is about 25 years old...

Sams actually has some decent looking ones.

I bought one from Sam's ,and the matching cabinets . I am well pleased with it .

My work bench is 15'+ long. The bench top is made of three staggered layers of 2'x8'x3/4" BCX plywood laminated together with water based exterior glue. I used duplex nails for temporary clenching on each of the two seperate laminations while the glue dried overnight. The final working surface layer is two pieces of 2'x8'x1/4" tempered masonite and countersunk wood screwed (no glue so it can be changed out) into the plywood. Total thickness is 2-1/2". Exposed edge trim is varnished 1/2"x3" clear KD pine. The masonite overlaps the edge trim.
The base is made from two Sears 48" black metal work stations each with two top drawers and two lower open spaces. These are near each end of the top creating a 16" cantilever and a 60" open center area.
