Been trying to figure out were to mount some work lights for the front and rear of my tractor, and was curios what light patterns everyone likes to use and which work better for what applications, such as flood, Trapezoid, and spot.

When it comes to lights, I don't think you can have enough.

I work in Ak and now the days are getting very short. I operate a roadgrader and have lights on the front, back, sides of the top of the cab and down below. It is wonderful to see 360 around you when backing.

With tractors, at least mine, it just has the factory back light and the two up front. Adding a good flood to the rear and one for each side to take care of the areas between them would be great. Floods are the best for close around the unit.

Floods for up close or for varying angles (I put floods on my loader project). Traps for distance with a still-usable spread. Spots for long distance, but aiming is more fussy than traps and they don't bleed light to the edges. IMO, tractor worklights should be flood or trap.

Another good choice is fog lights. They have a wide low beam. Perfect for low speed tractor work at night. You don't need to see as far with a tractor as you need to see whats around you and they are great for that.

I have 4 on the top of my BX's ROPS. Two floods points forward, one flood pointing backards and down to light up the implement and a trap pointing backwards and out a ways for driving.

IMHO the traps are perfect for tractor work. Spots are to focused, and the floods are not focused enough.

I just added small back-up lights to the rear of a canopy for rear implements, and fogs to the front.

They were cheap halogen lights from the chain auto-parts store, designed for probably more for cruising with your homies.

They have 55 wat bulbs, that I will replace with 27 or 35 to avoid alternator strain.

The cheap lights are imprecise enough that they provide lighting all over, not just in a tight fog pattern.

I added 2 rocker switches to the fender.

I have four 55-watt lamps mounted on the canopy, two facing front, two facing rear. I have one flood and one trap for each direction.

Since I had two leftover Deere low wattage worklights, I mounted them on each side to illuminate the sides of the tractor.

Each pair of lights is controlled by it's own switch and relay.

I don't need to work at night very often; but it's nice to have the lights when I need them.

Picasa Web Albums - Matt - Lights, Camer...

Since the album was created, a nearby lightning strike this summer fried a bunch of stuff around our place including the tractor's alternator. I replaced the stock 40-amp unit with the optional 55-amp one.

I install one 55 watt on rear and set 15' or so shine point..works like a charm.
Kubota L I feel has great lighting up front, but if I was useing blower more lights would be added.
