Work boots

I have boots that last because I buy good boots to start with. But everyone’s mileage will vary with any consumable item like boots, gloves, etc depending on how they use it.

Now, jstpssng, what the heck do you do to wear them out so fast?

We don't have trails; you take a compass and walk the line.
I've slowed down with age, but used to walk about 15-40 miles /week in all kinds of terrain. Walking through undergrowth, blowdowns, ledge, water, and anything else that gets in the way tends to be hard on them. Ferns and raspberries can be especially harsh. Waterproofing is OK, but when you're in the rain for days on end your feet and everything else is going to get wet. I've had Redwings, Chippewas, Emersons of Maine, and various other brands of boots. The best pair of leather boots that I ever owned came from a salvage store and had the tags cut off; if I knew who made them I would have bought another pair.

I guess you may be a surveyor or work on a surveyors crew?

I can see how that would be hard on boots but it’s a pretty extreme circumstance to get soaked wet and dried over and over. Do you rotate boots daily? Or how often?

I rotate them about once a year. :D It's not just any one thing; just hard on them overall. I have bought a pair of rubber boots on a Monday and torn the toe off coming up underneath a blowdown on Wednesday. I was a timber cruiser, and where the compass says, that's where you go. Well, except for that one time that it said the sun was rising in the west, but that's a story for another day.

I only buy Nicks Handmade Boots - Best Work Boots on the Market | Nicks Boots
You only buy these once, after that they can rebuild them for you. If woodland firefighters buy these to climb around mountains and walk on hot coals 18 hours a day, then they can handle anything regular human can throw at them. Once you get a pair of custom boots you'll never buy off the shelf boots again. After breakin these things are like slippers.

Custom hand made boots are a completely different level.

But if someone goes through boots the ways they say they do on here they should try a pair of handmade custom boots.

Those are nice looking boots, and you are right; if they will stand up to the punishment those guys give, they are tough.

What style were you wearing?

I have had some for about 30 years. Other than looking bad they still give good service.

Started with the 606 supersole or one similar with that sole which separated the toe after 3 weeks, and replaced under warranty, and the replacement shoe separated the toe 2 weeks later, which was then replaced with something similar to the dynaforce 8 inch style 400, which tore the leather lose from the upper sole and resulted in tread separation. Always loved insulated logging style boots with the vibram sole, but keep tearing the sole loose from the leather and had to have them repaired multiple times. Never could get a winter out of a pair, and I owned like 3 over the years.

Just for reference I can pick up a pair of $35 Brahma Bravo hiking boots from walmart and get a year out of them.

Bought a new pair of boots last night, had me thinking of this thread. I have been a Chippewa guy for as long as I can remember. The past few years we have been working in new buildings that are typically all concrete floors, and yesterday my feet were killing me after being on them all day. Stopped into Bass Pro Shop to buy some work pants ..and looked at the boot selection. ..Tried on a pair of Carhartt Irish Setter boots. Flat sole that is white, and fairly soft. .. the second I put them on they were comfortable..so I bought them. Wore them all day today and no foot aches... I may be a convert to the flat sole boot crowd now.

I use to buy Red Wing 2231 pull on boots but 10 years ago I become dissatisfied with the high price, short lasting of Red Wings and worst of all they wont sell online and dont have removable foot bed. Removable foot bed is now high on my must have in work boots, so few years ago I started with several brands of pull on boots, I wanted to buy another pair Thoroughbreds but seems like they went on strike last year or something and stop making pull on boots. For the past 25 years I only wear pull-on boots. lifes to short for me to tie on/untie boot laces.

Last Sept I couldn't wait any longer so I looked and looked online and took a gamble on these>> Men's Wolverine 1" Brek Wellington Steel Toe Waterproof Boots @ WorkBoots.com I was surprised how good they fit, fairly good tread, removable foot bed, sofar still holding up good.

Them few weeks later I found Caroliners and bought a pair of them, they have really deep tread the kind that will make your wife mad when you come in from outside on a muddy day if you know what I mean............I havent worn these yet but just trying them on they seem to be comfy but to be honest I think the Wolverines fit just wee better Men's Carolina 12" Composite Toe WP Wellington Logger Work Boot CA9831: MidwestBoots.com
Since those were a bit more money I decided to go to the oldest shoe store in the USA that is 20 mi from me and order them there, and to my surprise they sold them $25.00 cheaper up front with no haggling. I usually wear 9-EEE but for some reason most boot companies dont make EEE so I went up a half size in EE on both boots and that seems to fit good.

The only tie on boots I have now is the the Sorel snow packs I bought 40 years ago, I have yet to wear them out just wish I bought them in steel toe but back then I was young on my feet and could out move anything that might fall on my toe, could also fall down and bounce right back up, those days are long gone..............
