I’m in a process of painting my backhoe and the console valve is pretty rusty (see attached photo). Replacing it would cost me over $2K so that’s not an option but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help and protect it. Is there any sealer/paint I can apply to stop or slow down the rusting process?

Those valves might not have ever been painted. CorrosionX spray last about a year. Keeps my mounting pins easy use by hand. Wasp and mice don’t like it either.

I'm glad I asked because the rust volume just didn't make sense to me. I don't think it was ever painted and on that note would it make sense to apply CorrosionX to clean the rust, clean it as much as I can (not the easiest object to clean), apply primer and paint? I just don't know what will CorrosionX leave on it and if that will make the painting more challenging or not?

CorrosionX might not be the best if you are going to paint. Paint can interfere if you ever have to take apart hydraulics to repair. CorrosionX will stop the rust. One of the few products to fog aircraft to prevent corrosion. Friendly to electrical and hydraulic systems. CorrosionX is a boat owner’s best friend and finds a welcome spot on the farm. Since I’m the head mechanic appreciate using the product. Particularly when having to take apart equipment again 5,10, 20 years later.

@Smokeydog since you have experience with the product can you recommend which CorrosionX should I use. There are 3 different types and the heavy duty one seems like the one I should use?

I have used the heavy duty on chain drives. Mostly used the regular product. Keeps the welding table, tools, anvil rust free in high humidity. Doesn’t take much.

Tested many products trying to help our airstream camper survive weeks on the gulf coast beach. A perfect corrosion cell. Now many fellow campers swear by it. 24th year with same camper and truck. View attachment 713025

One last question - Do I need to clean it and remove the rust before applying it or will the product remove the rust for me?

No need to remove the rust. It will look like seasoned iron.

Thank you. I’ll post a picture with the end result.

Thank you. I’ll post a picture with the end result.
Do not use Corrosion X, or any similar product!
Use OSPHO as a primer, and then apply two thin coats of oil base enamel to the entire the assembly.
Use Corrosion X, Fluid Film, Boeshield, or LPS-3,.... AFTER painting, to seep into the spaces between the valves.
