Well, I just talked to my insurance guy and he said most insurance companies will not cover a homemade barrel stove in a barn. He says they will cover most brands of wood stoves, but not a homemade jobber.

Anyone want to buy a partially assembled 2 barrel wood stove?

I put my "old" Squire wood burning stove in my barn last year when I bought a new CC woodburning stove for my house. It works great, but it's way too small for a 60X80 barn that has 16' ceilings. I'm looking at possibly buying a much larger wood/coal burning furnace. Need a really nice 500 pound Squire stove?

As an example, if the stove is 24" wide, then you will need at least 48" of plate, so 12" on either side of the stove is protected besides the 24" behind the stove. Same for the height.:: Dusty when I lived in virginia the building code there said 36 inches to combustible material. When I installed a wood stove in my house this spring it said 36 inches to combustible materials also. That seems to be a common number. If you have a 24inch stove I think you should use a piece that is 72 inchest total behind the stove with the stove centered in it. That would give you 36 inches to any combustible material.

I just put a new Heathstone soapstone wood stove in and I love it. The directions for it said to use a double wall pipe from the stove to the ceiling and that allows me to have the stove pipe 8 inches from combustible material. I am not sure why a building code would not let you use double wall pipe it is safer and a whole lot more expensive.

My wife tries every new type of cleaner that the TV can point out to her. She got some stuff called DAWN power blaster (made by the same people that make dawn dishwashing soap) You can spray it on a woodstove window that is covered with residue. Let it set for about 5 minutes and then wipe it off. I have never seen anything clean those windows like this does.

No idea why they might not allow a double wall pipe either, and come to think of it, I have double wall pipe exiting my pellet stove. My propane garage heater has a single wall pipe that hooks up to the double wall pipe. You will need a different type of engineer than myself to explain it us.
I use a product called Greased Lightning on the glass of the pellet stove. Just spray it on the glass and wipe it down with paper towels. Spray again, and wipe, and all the residue is gone. It stays clean for a couple of days and then gets black again... It doesn't bother me, but it does the wife.

I'll have to try some of the stuff you're talking about. All I know is the stuff I use doesn't work. I get ticked off and put in a roaring hot fire with the blower off. That generally cooks off anything on the glass. It is rather odd to see the stove glowing red though...

Oven cleaner works well to clean the glass.

The stuff with LYE in it does. The other stuff doesn't do diddly in my experience.

The best bang for the buck I found was a generic drain cleaner (pretty much just lye water) that I thin out 50/50 with pure water. Works great. I went through about 6 other of the newer "eco-friendly" or "safe" cleaners (all that they sell around here) and they didn't work at all.

Lye was originally made from wood ash. Something else that has worked was using some of the fine white ashes on the door (removed from the stove so its flat) and a little water.

Ironic that what will clean your stove is already in your stove huh?

I tried a Mr Clean Eraser type of thing the wife had the other day on ours.
It was not real dirty but it came real clean.
Someone else try it and let us know your experience.
Best Regards,
James

I will stand by my original post. Dawn Power Blaster takes off the stuff on my glass with no effort at all. Spray it on and wait 5 minutes then wipe off. I dont know what it has in it But I hope not lye.

Greased Lightning doesn't contain lye, and it works immediately. No waiting, just spray and wipe for a clean stove glass. :D

I know that Home Depot has it and I have seen it in some of the grocery stores. I pay $7.99 for a gallon at HD and $3.99 for the filled spray bottle.
I found a 2 1/2 gallon jug at BJ Wholesale Club for $12.95. It comes in a white spay bottle taped to the side of the gallon sometimes. The bottle pictured came from Family Dollar for $3.00. Greased Lightning A & M Cleaning Products, Inc. P.O. Box1731, Clemson, SC 29639, 854-646-7730

Take a look at the pictures..... :D

I told my wife about this and she said she had seen it at either home depot or lowes. Next time we go to either one we will pick up some and see how it works. The first picture you posted looked almost exactly like what Dawn power blaster looks like when you spray it on. The last one did too. I imagine they might be similar type of cleaners.

I think I know Dawn Power Blaster. I think that I dated her sister back in the 1970's.:D

Dusty I had the name wrong it is actually Dawn Power Dissolver. You will want to remember that. I bought a small bottle of greased lightning and sprayed half of it on the wood stove window. I sprayed the other half of the window with Dawn Power Dissolver I waited 5 minutes and then wiped them both off. The Dawn took away twice as much material as the Greased Lightening. Dawn Power dissolver is made for spraying on pans that have cooked on food that has to be gotten off. It sure did work a lot better than greased lightening on my wood stove window

Okay, I bought some Greased Lightning. It did a good job with the light soot on the glass, but nothing with the black crusty stuff. Not too bad, but not great. Since it has a good tune and you can dance to it, I'll give it a B-. ;)
