Has anyone ever built a lift for firewood to move it from one floor to another. I am going to build a house and would like to build a masonary heater on the main floor and have a walk out basement. The hope is to keep the wood outside under the deck and bring in a load when needed and hoist it up to upper floor. See the attached web site.

The drive motor could maybe be a garage door opener?
I know you can buy one, but that would take the fun out of it.

I never had a firewood lift myself but I heated my house for 8 years with only wood. Make sure that you keep the fire wood away from the house ( termites ) /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and make sure that your lift is bigger than your ash box, The more you burn the more ashes you have to get rid of and that can be a big mess! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Good luck with you're project!

I have seenan article on such a project within the last two years in a magazine. I suggest you do a web search on the archives of such magazines as Fine Homebuilding, Workbench, Family Handyman, and similar.

I don't know if it will help or not, but go to Vintage Farm Plans and click on the link that says "Forklift" (it is a .pdf file). Plan is from the 60's for a "boat winch" type of forklift for a tractor but looks like it would give you a starting place for planning.

One thing I would like to see you do is build it where the bottom door has to be closed while it being used to lift anything. It would be simple to build a trip mechanism into the lift that would lock the bottom door unless the platform is at the bottom.

There was a Chiropractor killed in Galveston, Texas last year while he had his head in the bottom door of a dumbwaiter working on it and the platform fell on him. Think SAFETY FIRST!

I can't fix the planning for this lift. It's truly inexcusable when you know participant movements and examples yet at the same time have concern getting off a lift.

You replied to a 14 year old thread... just in case there's no response. ;)
