I have a zero turn z-rider cub cadet with a kohler 20 HP CV20s. The motor wont start unless you spray starting fluid into the air breather. it runs great after it starts. Shut it off and you have to do the above again to get it started.

Can you perform a compression test? If yes what is the compression on each cylinder?
After cranking the engine, pull the spark plugs to see if they are getting wet.
Does it smoke when it starts?
Hold the plugs against the head and crank it over. What color is the spark?
Answer these questions and some one can probably help point you in the direction of a cure.

Starter fluid can cause a strain on the engine, hense the smoke. maybe seafoam can help you get enough gas to make it crank normally?I agree on the choke, that makes a big difference on a cold start..

The engine runs great after start up because it is now running on the main jet. I think you have a low speed jet problem. There may be a damage seat in the low speed jet.
Check choke setting.

Clean out solenoid control in the bottom of the carb if it has one.
Set the low speed jet 2 and 1/4 turns out from bottom.
Check fuel pump supply.
To much of that starter fluid will pop a hole in the piston.
