As non-tractor owner living vicariously through TBNers, i am having PT withdrawal. Please post some weekend projects and what you did with you respectively sized PT's.

Very, very slow day at work.
Painfully pretty day outside /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Thanks

I, too am suffering withdrawal. I have a nephew mowing pastures with my PT 1845. He's not only having fun, but I'm paying him for it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Charlie,

I have heard TBNer tales of the lone 1845er, driving through clouds of billowing grass, closely followed by two pull behind mowers...

Maybe if your not driving, you could post a couple of picks of the setup /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Alas, only one wing mower. Bubenberg has two sometimes behind his 425. My nephew isn't yet checked out with the Acrease, so pictures will be a while. Sorry.

I mowed my lawn Sunday, if that is any consolation. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Average height of grass=8". I live on 1.19 acres. I believe the lawn totals just under 1 acre. I went slow to maximize pleasure and minimize windrowing. It took all of about 35 minutes, and then it was over /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I took some pictures of a tape measure in the lawn before and after. Would you like to see them?

Broke the lift arm pivot so had to send the entire lift arms to Tazewell for repair. UPS sais it would take 8 days to get there from Montana. You talk about withdrawals, having them big time.
Projects that I am working on prior to this break are as follows:
-new tractor/garden shed being built
-lava rock placement
-ornamental grasses on one acre
This was just last week with more projects waiting.

Yeah, i would like to see the pics. If you ever get a chance i would also be curious to see what kind of job your rough-cut mower does on turf???

Are they on your website?

Thanks

I've never tried the brush hog on turf. I'll let a patch grow up behind the garden and give it a try in a couple of weeks. And, of course, I'll take pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll post the pictures of the tape measure in the grass over the weekend, as my daughter has a late softball game tonight.

I have a PT-180 with a 45" brush cutter and it works so well I no longer plan on getting a finishing mower. I lowered the deck to the lowest settings.

One problem I had with the brush cutter was the grass would get thrown between the front left wheel and the inside valve stem was torn off three times by the buildup. I bought a stem plug at a local hardware store for 24 cents and have had no problems since.

PT purchase just got abotu $2000 closer /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did you change the spindles?

The only modification I did was lower the deck. Unless someone is super particular about their lawn I don't believe they would be able to tell much difference between a finishing mower cut and the bush hog cut I have on my PT.

I have plans on getting a few more attachments in the next three months or so and the finishing deck was one of them. I believe it would be a waste of money for me any how.

The main reason I got the Power Trac was for bush hogging. I had torn up three riding mowers (mainly the flimsy decks) trying to clear parts of my land they weren't designed for.

MY 422 has been put through a few projects...lots of grass cutting(apprx 2 acres near the house and another 2.5+ of pasture)....the pasture was so high that the grass was heavy in the front of the PT and in the motor wells....next time I'll use the Farmall/belly mower if it gets that high again. Rain washed out part if our lane...so on went the bucket and I smoothed out the lane and repaired the "drainage ditches". Used the bucket also to strip out the 3 horse stalls and replace with fresh sawdust...got a little too close to the stall boards and tore one off!(had to use the hammer to fix that, couldn't figure out how to do it with the PT /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)Still experimenting with the blade height for finish mowing around the house...next to lowest setting was def. too short, will try the next highest this week. I can say I no longer put off grass cutting..now I need good noise cancellation headphones to listen to the ballgame while mowing!

Most experts recommend 3".

I cut my lawn once with my PT-425 Brush Mower set at 3". It cut and looked good, except that the grass is just cut at the base - not mulched.

Blade MUST be very sharp! Blade speed is slow.

Fourteen is right. The blade-tip speed of the finish mower is much faster than the brush-hog. This results in the finish mower giving a terrific mulching cut, whereas the field mower tends to leave stuff all over the place. However, the field mower is 'unstoppable', as MossRoad likes to say. If you didn't care to mulch the lawn, and wanted something pretty versatile to clean up fields and such, the brush-hog would be my choice. If you mostly do finish mowing with the occasional medium-duty use (e.g. whacking weeds, NOT small shrubs, etc.) then I would get the finish mower. I have both, and use them accordingly.

Sincerely,

Rob /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Exactly!! It all comes down to what YOU want for YOUR property!

Notice that I said I used the PT-425 Brush Mower on my lawn once. I have a 1976 Power King which, after removing the front blade, ag tires, and wheel weights, then installing the 48" mower deck and turf tires, is my weapon of choice for my lawn. It has 3 blades and a full width set of rear rollers, which produce a nice smooth cut. I don't know what the speed is, but it must have a very high tip speed because it sounds like a jet helicopter taking off when I engage the electric clutch to drive the blades!!
I love it, especially in the Fall, when it absolutely atomizes the leaves!! Although I live in a 10 acre forest, I do not own a leaf rake!!

I used the Power King for chewing trails through the woods, but broken spindles convinced me that the Power Trac Brush Mower was better suited for that job!! Now the Power King does the lawn better, while the Power Trac does the trails better!!
