My wife got up this morning and found Windows 10 installed on her computer. She didn't know what to do.

I got on it and clicked Next and then Declined the installation. It restored her Windows 7.

Anyone know how I can contact Dell or maybe Microsoft, whomever did it?

I tried Dell contact, but it told me that her machine is out of date and not eligible for any support.

I don't want Windows 10 because very likely her Office 2003 won't work on it. It would not install on this Windows 10 machine that I have. I not only had to buy a new Office but also had to buy a separate Publisher. Publisher was included on my Office 2003 but not on my wife's.

lots of info on the internet on this, but unfortunately a lot of it is dated and no longer effective.

i recently followed the steps HERE and the Windows10 nag screens finally stopped. i used the GWX.exe program.

the page seems to be kept up to date.

Did the same thing, but did not restore W7 entirely. You'll get a mix of W7 and W10 a real bummer.

Thanks. Send an e-mail to my wife with this URL in it.

Will do it from her machine and hopefully stop this stuff.

I put windows 10 on my computer. It took a bit of learning to get down the operation of it, but I don't find it to be as bad as some claim. So far no problem using my office pack.

Many features of Office 2003 (all of the online functions) don't work on any version of Windows anymore. We just upgraded from 2010 due to it no longer having access to the template galleries.

Use GWX control panel Ultimate Outsider - Software Downloads . stops asking for updates etc.

It could very well be an excellent OS, but what ticks me off is the 'shove it down your throat' attitude of MS. Call me stubborn but I wouldn't use it now for spite.Mike

I saw this thread this morning and thought nothing of it. Came in around 2:00 and found my cursor quivering. Then screen went blank and it announced Windows 10 was being installed. I suspect in the long run this is good for me but it took a while to respond to all their screens and start accessing my favorite stuff again [like TBN]. Must say its quite disconcerting that they can do this without permission.

It may be interesting (or disturbing/scary) to go into Windows Event Viewer and see what you have for warnings or errors after an upgrade to Win10. My wife and I both got new laptops recently that came with Win10, but it appeared it may have had Win7 prior and was upgraded by the manufacturer before going to the retail seller. Both laptops had similar errors that indicated some programs or services were not functioning, which I suspect may have previously worked under Win7.

Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer. Under Custom Views look at Administrative Events. Much of what's in there is pretty cryptic, but can give a clue if there's a problem with the machine.

When I woke up my computer this am while trying to wake myself up with morning coffee I was greeted with a windows update screen laid out like one of those sleasy pop ups with no way to click out. It "protested" while I did the old cntrl-alt-delete. I need to take the time to clean up the upgrade files this weekend. Win 7 and Office 2003 work just fine for my limited (semi-retired) needs.

That's why you should turn automatic updates off. Then you can go to windows update when you want to and decide what gets installed and what doesn't. Automatic update is evil if you let it run. It will install stuff and reboot your pc when you don't want it to. Just turn it off!

Windows 10 is downloading using fully one third of my allotted data for this month. Thank you pin heads at Microsoft. I read several articles trying to find a patch to prevent the download. I enabled the Administrator account and from there modified (added) two entries to the registry using regedit. I also used gpedit script to modify the group policy (Win 7 Pro). The registry entries and the group policy editor do the same thing, that is prevent new OS updates from installing. I also downloaded and ran Never 10 from Steve Gibson Research. When run it confirmed that my system was configured to never update to a new OS. Never dd find a patch to prevent the download. Oh well, at least it should not install 10.

Wow. I installed GWX Control Panel several weeks ago and had W10 removed. This morning it alerted me W10 was downloading.
I had previously stopped auto update and blocked downloads until I approved them.
Microsoft disabled GWX Control Panel and reset my update to auto. Would not allow me to postpone the restart.
Had to get GWX again and run it before the 10 minute restart kicked in to prevent W10 from installing.

For those resisting the Win10 upgrade you might also be interested in the "Consumer Experience Improvement Program" updates, MS is installing them on Win7 and Win8 machines. These CEIP updates add to Win7 systems some of the same telemetry data collection that Win10 is performing. The following link outlines this and lists the Knowledge Base updates involved.

There is a list of 47 updates apparently waiting to be downloaded and installed on my Windoze 7 computer. Most are labeled "security update." Is there a way to determine if any of those is the phantom windoze 10 download?
