Will some tractor makers not survive?

i saw on this thread someone said kubota is kncking jd out of 100hp tractor range, while they are popular here in farm country for compacts. they are few and far between in utlity and 100hp range. to light. great compact though.

Give them time now that they have focused on that range (and above). It hasn't been long. Of course that level of dealership needs to be in place.

Succession and subdivision of farmland among heirs is one major reason farm sizes are so small in China and India (others being pre-mechanization limits on ability to farm more land...and, of course land ownership/title-transfer considerations).

I know nothing about property rights in China, India, and other countries. However, I suspect that uncertainty regarding those rights limits investment in commercial farming operations in some countries. The experience in Zimbabwe comes to mind -- Land reform in Zimbabwe - Wikipedia.

Just beginning to see more orange in the 100hp range here. Generally green. Curious to see how that changes as Kubota pushes into the AG market.

Beginning to hear rumblings regarding AG development on the African continent. I'd be interested in your opinion about that Steve?

Richard, I don't know enough to comment. William Easterly is a development expert whose work I admire and I would respect his opinion on the topic.

Someone had mentioned Allis-Chalmers in this discussion and I remember when dad sold them that Deutz purchased controlling interest in them in the early mid 80's. Painted green and utilized air cooled engines.
And quickly dropped out of the market. All is Was in very bad financial shape and Deutz bought them for the dealer network expecting a corresponding jump in market share. As related by the last president of Deutz-Allis, he went to the Germans with a list of requirements he had from visiting American customers and dealers. The answer from Germany was, "Convince the American farmer to change their farming practices, our design is right!" He said he knew then they would not survive so he put a group of 4 other management employees together and bought the company. AGCO is the result, starting with Deutz-Allis, adding Hesston, White Farm Equipment, and Massey-Ferguson among several others. Deutz would not change to meet customer demands so their company is now a shell of what it once was, and the Air Diesel is dead.

Very interesting history. Egos built on success often contribute to failure. Odd quirk of human nature. Often seen.
