Will some tractor makers not survive?

I have one Kubota with faded wheels and one with brand new looking wheels. Don't know why. Aren't wheels sourced In the US? If so, probably a quality control issue with multiple vendors.

Yeah, mine are Titan and I'm sure painted by Titan.

Titan was founded just up the road from me. Talk about who owns who and who's acquired who, this is an interesting read:

About Titan - Titan International

Yep, I read that a few years ago. My M9540 has Titan wheels and tires. I have no complaints. I was researching Titan in regards to our Township purchasing a new Road Grader with Titan tires.

Someone had mentioned Allis-Chalmers in this discussion and I remember when dad sold them that Deutz purchased controlling interest in them in the early mid 80's. Painted green and utilized air cooled engines.

I have seen a number of Midwest farms where it's been in the family for generations and all the kids have to do is pay attention and not screw it up to succeed. They don't need to borrow because of that and even with that situation that would set them up for life, don't want to farm. They want the cash--fast--when the land is sold from the estate but would rather be a teacher and track coach or whatever and take cruises during holiday vacations and drink lattes at a coffee shop.

It's long been said that the first generation creates the wealth, the second lives off the interest and the third lives off the principal and spends the wealth.

Colleague of mine from work bought a farm on an auction. The farm had two lakes, one of them about 100 ac, leased lime stone quarry, explosives storage and total area several hundred ac for starting price 300 000. He was only bidder. He told me his limit was 1000000. The lease on the quarry expired shortly after he purchased it and new lease contract he signed increased the payment significantly. The people selling it had no idea what they had on hand and just wanted the cash quickly.

LOL. Missing meals?? That's funny. I don't need the government to control the price of food. Do you need the government welfare checks to survive?

It only bothers you because it's true. I'll be happy to expand further if you like and give examples.

I know there are a lot of subsidies, I'm not arguing that. But remember a good size farm may pay income tax in the 7 figures. If some of their hard earned tax dollars comes back to them, OK with me. Now if they want to drop the corp tax rate way down and then remove some subsidies, that can be discussed. Smaller government, less taxes, less perks...I like that idea. Dial it all back.

We probably ought to leave this political stuff off TBN. You won't get much support here, and it muddies up threads.

God Bless our farmers!

As to the discussion of family farm succession to the next generation. It isn't just that the next gen never wants to farm. Part of the problem is that you can have too many successors and the split becomes problematic if not planned very well, and planned way in advance. For example, on one multi-generational farm of which I am familiar, the farm was started around 1900. When 1st gen passed away, it went to his two sons and part ownership to a daughter that was not involved in the operation of the business. So 2nd gen was a three way split. That works, the farm grew and there was enough income. The 2nd gen folks each had 3 kids. As it passes to the 3rd gen, some of the folks wanted to farm, some just wanted some ownership, and some wanted to cash out. You have 9 successors, but it's not all neat a tidy as not all the 2nd gen want to pass on the farm (or die) at the same time. Now we go to the next gen, and the potential ownership of the farm can be a couple dozen families. Combine that with some really stout land prices and sometimes selling the farm means everyone is well off.

Family owned business succession through the generations is complicated. It takes a pretty tight family with some smart pre-planning to make it happen. It's not always a lack of desire or "those darn kids running off to the city and don't want to work" type of deal.

Succession and subdivision of farmland among heirs is one major reason farm sizes are so small in China and India (others being pre-mechanization limits on ability to farm more land...and, of course land ownership/title-transfer considerations). Those agrarian societies have been facing this pattern for many, many generations. Now, there may be more off-farm employment options and the lure of the big city (and declining birth rates) can take the pressure off and, maybe, let farm sizes start to increase toward a more economically-viable size...versus just subsistance farming.

My large farmer friend is sixty, second generation. He has two Sons and a Daughter. He's trying to step back and let them take on more responsibility. I was in their office visiting a couple weeks ago. The Son-In-Law wanted to sell some Soybeans thinking the market was gonna drop. This simple act required 15 minutes of very serious discussion and debate. Speculation was rampant. In the interim of discussion beans dropped 6 cents a bushel. They were debating selling 38,000 bushels. That debate cost them $2,280.......

Things the non-farming community know nothing about. But then, they can just go down to the local USDA office and get a handout to cover it. :)
