What?! You want to borrow my tractor. No ******* way! You’d have better luck asking to swap….…something else for a couple days.

(IMO) If the tiller has a shear bolt or PTO slip clutch it will be fine.
The slip clutch or shear bolt limit the amount of torque the tiller gets and will be be sized to protect the tiller’s gear box. Make sure they are correctly sized and operational. (Note: At a reduced rpm, the bigger tractor may be putting less horsepower (and heat) into the tiller’s gearbox than the little tractor at 540 rpm).

(IMO) I think the real danger is having a small tractor on a big tiller where the shear bolt protects the tiller but not the tractor.
I hear ya. I hate borrowing anything I can’t afford to replace if damaged. I didn’t ask to use it. It was offered up and I didn't want to make him feel like his was not enough unit for my tractor. I already told him it wasn’t a good match for my tractor. I’ll disc instead this year.

The tiller will only use what hp is required to operate, not all the hp/torque you have. That might take a stall situation w/o a shear pin or slip clutch on the PTO shaft. A chance to show the owner how to use the tiller on his own tractor?
He already tilled a good size vegetable garden so I didn't want to ask him to till my land. He offered it up. I‘M just gonna tell him it’s not a good match for my Tractor. That I might damage it, and get my own next year

Swap tractors for a couple of days.
He doesn’t have a lot of experience with tractors. His is a small 1025r. No shifting. Mine is a full size utility tractor 8 fwd and 4 rev. Gears, 4x4 with a loader w/6’ bucket (cat 2). It is an 8500 lb beast that can do a lot of damage if not operated properly. I’d be afraid he’d hurt himself on my tractor. Besides. He doesn’t do near the amount of tractor work that I do, so he’d probably not get much use out of mine. I’m just gonna tell him his tiller is not a good match for my tractor and let it go at that. Thanks for the suggestion tho

This is correct.

That said, if I borrow something, I am ready to buy it if something goes to crap:)

Best,

Glad you're going with the disk. IMHO .. The shear pin will protect the tiller gears from too much torque. BUT... if the tines or tiller body get caught on something or you're just going too fast, your large tractor will pull until something lets go... usually some part of a small tiller.

Gearboxes are rated for certain ranges of hp. I have no ideal of the HP rating for his tiller, but with it being a recent purchase, he should have a manual (often in a tube mounted on the implement) or info available from the dealer.
With a 65hp engine tractor, I would hate to use a 4’ tiller. You will quickly be running a tire track through tilled soil compacting soil as you do so. I suspect it would happen on the second pass next to the 1st pass. If not definitely on the 3rd passes and every pass thereafter.

Hi everyone. I have a fairly large JD utility tractor - 65hp with 55hp at the PTO. I need to rototill two areas that are each 1/2 to 3/4 ac. My neighbor offered me use of his new 4’ rototiller that he bought with a new JD 1025R, so pretty small. I’m just wondering if it would damage his rototiller to run it on my tractor. If the worst case scenario would possibly be a shear pin that probably wouldn’t be a big deal but I’m just afraid to take him on his offer and ruin his tiller. Any thoughts?
If your good friends, ask him if he would like to do it with his 1025. tell him you'll buy him a case of beer or a steak dinner and a tank of fuel.

Buy or rent your own tiller.

Never borrow anything you can't pay for.

I don't but if everybody went by that I'd never see family again, or many old friends, unless I want to keep them away. Some cost more than others in the long run.
