Not sure, but you dont have to worry about others telling you that you might be better off with a gooseneck.

I think the max towing capacity is 6100 to 6300lbs, If your trailer weight is 1800 and if I read John Deere's spec's right, your base tractor weighs 1660lbs, not sure if you have a fel or not but all the weights look good for hauling with your van. Keep in mind of the weight on your implements.

This isn't exactly a perfect comparison, but I towed a 3400 pound car on a 2000 pound trailer with my 99 Tahoe, and while sure, I certainly felt it back there, it did it just fine. You have 10 years worth of improvements with the 09 1/2 ton, and you'd be towing much less weight. I'm not towing expert, but I wouldn't hesitate to use that setup for even a tenth of a second.

I tow about 6000 lbs of boat and trailer with my 2005 1/2 ton express. It does just fine. I wish it had a little more motor. It seems like you really have to rev the 5.3 to get good power from it. I also keep it out of overdrive, but that's a whole different discussion.

My towing guide book shows the max tow rating for the 1500 series van at 6,200#. It will do it but like mentioned before if you have a FEL or implements you wil get real heavy real quick.

Also remember that tow ratings are assumed. What they do is take the weight of the truck and subtract that from the GCWR. Lets say for argument sake your GCWR is 13,000# and the van weighs 6,500#. The manufacture has to give a credit for a driver and fuel when getting the tow ratings certified so let say in this case they give 150# for the driver and 150# for the fuel. That puts your van at 6,800# rolling down the road with you in it and when you subtract that from the 13,000# GVWR you get the 6,200# tow rating.

The issue I see here is you said you work out of it. How much do you think you have in the back in tools, ect? Lets say 1,500#. That now comes directly off your tow rating so that 6,200# magic number is now 4,700#.

Remember, at the end of the day what matters is that you do not exceed the max GVWR or GCWR for your vehicle and do all this while not exceeding any axle or tire rating.

The GVWR for any vehicle can be found inside the drivers door on the data sticker. You will usually have a rating for the front axle, rear axle, and the GVWR. The sum of the front and rear axles is usually more than the GVWR but at the end of the day you must be under the GVWR and do not exceed the axle or tire ratings.

Hope this helps.

GVWR = gross vehicle rating = max weight of the vehicle, includes cargo-fuel-passengers, and trailer tongue load.

GCWR = gross combined wheel rating = max of the vehicle as described in GVWR and the weight of the trailer and its contents.

Simply way to see where you are at is have things weighed.

Chris

thanks for the help guys....I also forgot to mention that this express has the V6 and not the V8.......from what I can find on the web everything is telling me the max towing capacity is 4300 for the V6 and 6300 for the V8....

I'll go take a look at the tag on the door.....didnt even think about that....lol...

I do have a fel , mid 62" deck and a rear 4 foot cutter but I dont think I'll be transporting them all....just mostly the 2320 and fel and maybe a box blade later on down the road....

With the V6 forget it. My guess is if you are hauling tools and supplies you would be lucky to legally pull the trailer empty. You need more truck or van.

Also, remember the door tag does not tell you what it will pull, simply the max weight that can be on the vans wheels. If you have any questions contact me or re-read my post above. I know its long winded but tells you everything you need to know.

For the few times it sounds like you need it moved just have a roll back wrecker do it. Maybe $75. It will take a long time to justify a new trailer and tow rig for that money. You just do not have the right tow vehicle to do this safely.

The old Dodge is equipped with a 318 or better yet a 360 and in good condition mechanically will be a much better tow vehicle. Just make sure the frame is solid, probably not a issue where you are at, it had a tranny cooler if a auto, and its brakes and other mechanical's are up to snuff.

My book only goes back to 1991 but a 1/2 ton Dodge 4x4 with the 318 or 360 both have a 8,100# tow rating. I am guessing there is not that much difference between the 85 and 91???? Was there any significant changes between them years?

Im thinking the dodge would be the better choice also( it has the 318).....My wife said if the dodge breaks down then at least the service van is still on the road making money.....

I don't think there were many changes between the 85-91...mostly just the looks ...

I was just quoted a 83" x 18' longhorn trailer with breaks and rear ramps for $1950......the trailer only weighs 1500 lbs ( light trailer to pull around)but can handle a 7000 lb load.....it has two 3500 lb axles....

So, 5500 lbs is what you can load on the trailer.

yep.....the 2320 is about 1700 lbs and then the fel and rear cutter would probably come out to a total of about 2500 lbs....

Just looked at that old 318 Dodge. Man, they only made 140 hp in 85.

Yes indeed the 80s were horrible, especially for automobiles. I remember when the lil red truck from dodge was the fastest thing on the road, faster than the same year vette. That was the late 70s I believe.
