Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and just wanted a bit of insight from all those that are experienced. I own a 2002 Wiley's jeep and was wondering if I could modify it and run it as a tractor. I saw a couple of videos of people in the US doing it and also found out that Wiley's themselves made a tractor jeep long ago. According to some basic calculations I did, if I add a secondary reduction after the gearbox the jeep should be able to produce enough traction. So is this possible ? Or am I missing something here a. And any idea why something like this doesn't already exist ? A car or jeep that can be used to plough and till.

Thanks in advance for your response.

A 2002 doesn't have the PTO opening in the rear of the transfer case, and the fuel tank is now in the rear where some of the 3 point hitch mechanisms fit, and it would also block the PTO shaft.

The gearing wasn't reduced in the farm Jeeps compared to others, but the axles were normally geared 5.38 to 1 in that era. About half that now.

Some had the optional 4sp truck transmissions with a very low first gear.

You can get lower gears for some modern transfer cases.

Modern frames are much stronger.

Okay thanks for the info. But I have a few queries :

1. Is it possible to use any kind of jeep effectively as a tractor ?
The farm jeep shown in the links you posted, do they work well ? And can they still be used as jeeps ?

2. Is it possible for me to just use a normal drawbar hitch instead if a 3PTH ?

3. Will the weight in the rear wheels and traction produced be enough for a 2WD jeep to plough effectively on different kinds of soil L

Thank you

Sorry to sound like a noob. But why not ? If a jeep can put down the same amount of torque at the wheel, what's the basic differentiator ?

I hadn't noticed where you are. Jeeps (with that name on them. Some people call any utility 4x4 a jeep) may have different drive trains than USA Jeeps.

A 4x4 Jeep is probably as good as a 2wd compact tractor at pulling towed implements. I known several farmers who used them for pulling rakes, balers, harrows, and sprayers. I've never seen anyone plow or disc with a Jeep, except in ads.

A 2wd Jeep would probably tow lightweight wheeled implements on firm ground, but I wouldn't expect more.

It is often less expensive to sell what you have, then buy what you need, than to try to convert something. (as in changing a 2wd Jeep to 4wd)

I actually own a Wiley's jeep. But I understand what you mean.

Okay I guess I see what you mean. But in case I strapped on huge *** agricultural tires on to it, would it still not be able to do it ?
I'm sorry. I just dint get why it doesn't work. The components are pretty much the same. And the value are too. There still seems to be a difference. And this is when I'm comparing a jeep tractor to let's say a 20-30 HP Tractor

Read about "doodlebug tractors" for ideas on converting 2wd cars and trucks to tractors.
