White tails for sure!
Several year ago I saw a pair while in my stand.
First I though some one let some sheep loose but as they got closer I saw that they were deer. (two skippers)

Seen many pictures but they've always been white tail deer.
Any one ever seen white mule or black tail deer?

I to had shepherds, two as a child. They were the best. They took the best care of me and my sister. But my wife doesn't like large dogs. I saw an airedale once and thought it was really regal looking. So when the time was coming near to get our first dog I did a lot of research and very strongly considered the airedale. My wife was very uncertain about the breed till we saw a breeder and her dogs. If my wife would have left it up to me I would have a shephard for sure. I'm glad she didn't. This dog is 40 lbs lighter than my shepherds but has endurance to almost no end. She is also really protective of my wife and myself, but not agressive. A great inside dog, very smart (can think on their feet) and the best sense of humor too. I hear also that they were used for hunting bear because they not only treed the bear but wouldn't let it down. I had a link (lost it) from a guy who used his airedale to upland bird hunt, duck hunting, rabbit-coon-squirrel hunting, hunt bear, do tracking trials. He said his dog never placed first but always was competative (usually in the top 1/3). I could go on....

Someday we will have two of them.

Very rare. I have never seen one before or in a picture but have heard about it. Maybe Thomas has some expert advice. Nice that you can get it on film. I'll have to ask about the white deer to some of the real old time vermonters. I don't know anything about genetics but wonder if it can be passed by every generation or if it skips or what?

rlk,
Great pictures!!
The old saying goes if they hang around and have off springs that well bring you luck.
I believe its against the law in some state to shot at any wildlife thats white.
In my years in the woods I never seen wildlife 100% white, and you have them by your bedroom window /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif..I'm jealous.

Keep snapping more pictures, also maybe your fish and wildlife might be interested.

Thomas,

Several years ago I recall having a "camp fire talk"
where white deer came up in discussion.
I recall some one saying the same (no shoot), but others saying
that the Fish&Game folks didn't want them (white one) in the local gene pool.
I let the two I saw walk on by as they were clearly young skippers, no horns and all I had was a buck tag!

What I always thought was amazing, given their large size (moose) how quickly they move in the woods.

Or when not spooked, just how slow they move.
Sat on stand one day and had a small bull (4pt) with cow
wander in, they took almost an hour to move through my
viewing area. Finally had enough, coughed at them, and in
about 2 seconds later, gone!

Heard a few clackity-clacks as the bull moved through the woods.

rik, Fantastic, truly fantastic.
<font color=blue>Anyone else have unusual animals like this?</font color=blue>
No, but you gave me an excuse to tell a story. Back in the 1800's there was a saloon in San Antonio named The Buckhorn Saloon. The owner began collecting antlers, that he aquired from cowboys who frequented his establishment. The cowboys who found unusual horns could trade them for for drinks. After awhile the bar was festooned with horns , just about from top to bottom. The bar passed thru other hands who also added to the collection, until the 50's when it was purchased by Harry Jerzig, who owned the Lone Star Brewery. He had it moved lock, stock, and barrel to the grounds of the brewery. He added quite a bit more to it, making it into more of a museum. The brewery since has been sold and resold, and finally closed down. The Buckhorn has been moved to a new location back in downtown San Antonio.
The last time I saw it was at the brewery, so I don't know about the new location. Here is a few of the things they had.
A 78 point buck, a doe with a rack (can't recall how many points it was) , A deer normal color except for large white spots over it's body. All are mounted of course. And an assortment of oddities like a cow with horns curved down growning into her eyes, two headed calves. and so forth.
I don't remember seeing an all white deer. I'll bet they would have loved to have had that buck that was hit.

ErnieB, what did they do with the rest of the museum? The first time I was there at the Buckhorn Saloon and rest of the museum at the Lone Star Brewery was in '62 (twice); quite a museum, with different "halls" with mounted animals from different countries. Seemed to have just about everything that ever grew a horn, antler, or tusks (including an elephant head). And the last time I was there was in '68 and they'd added a "Hall of Fins" with an amazing assortment of mounted fish. I've often wondered where that collection went.

The second time I was there in '62, I took my cousin down there; I was 22 and he was 20. When we walked up to the bar in the Buckhorn, the bartender never asked for ID, our ages, or anything. He just asked me if I'd like a beer, and without missing a beat, turned to my cousin and asked him if he'd like a root beer. When we left (after the second round), my cousin was grumbling about having to drink root beer instead of the real thing, but I told him I thought it was awfully nice of them to have root beer for the kiddies./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Around here there are a few pockets of white deer pop. The Seneca Army depot has a herd of a few hundred white deer. There is a spot in PA. that has quite a few in it. I had a white 6 pt. buck that was running around my house a few years ago, someone got him during the bow season. I kinda wish that he would have passed on him, it was neat to see standing in the backyard.

Dave,
Even our Fish & Game doesn't want the white deer to breed. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
I wonder how some of those persons or person would feel if another group said your gene pool must come to and end.

I look at this way....just one more of nature wonders to enjoy. /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Dave,
For sure a moose can put on a show, and have you ever seen a good size bull trot along in autumn than come to couple of close trees he thinks he can pass thru.
After he gets stun or little goofy those trees sure do pay a price. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Have you been to Moose Alley which is located Pittsburg,NH...good place to see them.

I would have to say the most amazing would have to be the black bear.
There so quick..pretentious..disposition both good and bad.

Okay I let out one of my trades.
Take a #10 food can poke a hole in the bottom, than take a sneaker shoe string tie knot on one end than pull the string thru the poke hole w/ the knot inside of the tin can, than take a good damp rag and pull gently w/ short strokes on the string as you hold the bottom of the rim of the can, make sure the open end of the tin can facing away from you.
Best time to practice about month before there rut season...and if you should try this during moose rut season be careful, for a love sick bull just might pay you a visit. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Oh I do any trade for filming deer w/a mirror. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

ERNIEB,
A 78 point buck /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif thats a non typical for sure, and I wonder if B&C or P&Y ever visited this place.

Every now and than someone does harvest a doe w/ antlers up here...we call them bi-deer . /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Thomas, I think the only time I ever heard of a doe with antlers before was one the museum Ernie mentioned had mounted in San Antonio.

I've heard that before too. I have not seen it. But talked to the guy who got it. According to VT fish and game it is a legal buck.

Rowski,
Do you recall if the deer came out of the Northeast Kingdom area? I hunted there a few years back and actually saw a skull cap from a "bi-deer"(Thomas) It had (don't know what is called but it's what you feel on a button buck, where the horns grow) on one side and smooth as you'd exspect on the other. The locals said that one or two get tagged every year. Now that's gene pool that needs a cleaning! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
