It is CAT 3 direct burial 5 pair telephone cable. It is twisted pair, and it will be very important that the twist be maintained right up to the termination point. And it goes without saying that it is vital that the pairs be left "paired". In other words, not just random wires matched up by using an ohmmeter or continuity checker to "buzz" them out. Will it work? Yes probably at a reduced speed, may or may not do 100 mbs but likely to do 10 pretty easy. As long as you get a link light and some thruput it could be said to "work". So in my opinion it will likely "work" at 200 feet from the last repeated point. (switch port). It sure won't pass near end crosstalk test, but if the wiremap is good (in other words you laid the wires down correctly) and the twist direction and twist ratio is maintained, I believe it will function.

Strip it back some more, and do not let the pairs unwrap from each other, carefully clean off the "ickypick" jellylike filling inside the cable (this is a waterproofing compound) and maintaining the twist right up to the termination point of the jack you are going to punch them down on. Good luck with it, and let us know how it turns out. Ask more questions if you need to, and I will try to assist.

Not twisted.
I'll piece something together as a try, but got fading hopes now.

It is twisted.. you will need to cut back about a foot and carefully strip back the outer jacket and rodent shield to see the twist. You cannot tell the twist by cutting back 2 inches of cable. The twist is not as much as you would expect from a cat 5 or cat6 cable, because it is NOT a cat 5 cable, it is CAT 3 at best or perhaps even CAT2. But it is twisted.

Bought two of those cat5e terminations that Gunny pointed me to at Home Depot. Thanks Gunny.
Punched them in to the ends of that cable.....and it worked like a charm.
So for $6 and my invaluable time...I got a 100% signal now in the barn.
WHY didn't I do it sooner! Now....I got some other possibilities to explore with my network in the barn now, with my winter projects out there.

For anyone interested that cable had 10 wires in it, 5 very slightly twisted pairs.

If you are happy with it, that's all that matters.

For kicks, go to Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test and run a test from your house, and again from the barn. This will tell you how much speed you are losing with the long run of wire. Would be interested in the difference in the two tests.

Don't be surprised if it doesn't show any loss, as most in-home networks are much faster than the external speed of the internet service that most people purchase.

Did the test...on new access point on other side of the house from main router...on the main router....and the one in the barn.

NO difference. In fact the barn was slightly faster, but it all had to do with the internet's condition at the time of the test. All test results was very close.
