Sunday afternoon, while puttering in my shop, I noticed my bride running toward our livestock while chambering several rounds into her 12ga. The way she was waving that shotgun around I was sure my truck and tractor were in mortal peril, but she reached the end of the garage, dropped to one knee while taking aim at something in the direction of the chicken coop, and let loose her first blast. It knocked her right on her can! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Then she got up, charging forward while pumping another round and firing as fast as she could. It was like Linda Hamilton in that scene in Terminator II! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

By the time I caught up with her she had run out of ammunition and a very dead red fox, with a banty hen in its mouth, lay in front of her.

We normally get extra birds to feed the occasional hawk or coyote, but the foxes are harder to deal with. They kill every bird they see, leaving bodies all over the place. Last year, in a five minute period, we lost nearly three dozen hens. The sheer waste of it all is depressing. But this fox's hunting days are over.

And to think when we first met she'd never handled a firearm! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks for the very descriptive story -- I could picture this event very clearly in my mind. I especially liked the part about your wife's first shot knocking her on her can. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great story!!
It's amazing how a woman jumps to action when something threatens her brood. That nesting instinct must be over-powering to them.

My wife's due at the end of the month. I'm finding out first hand about the nesting instinct. She was asking me to baby-proof the house back at month #1. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Where I work the 12 gauge with 00 buckshot is one of our duty weapons. The female officers must also qualify with the shotgun. We train for a good shooting stance to prevent the getting knocked over situation and it works well.

I'll try and explain. Off hand leg in front and bent at the knee, with wieght on the front leg, leaning forward. Shooting hand leg behind/stable and body able to rock back with the recoil. The butt of the gun snug to the pocket of the shoulder before firing.

That donkey in the yard woulda got that fox for you /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I hear you, Dan. I've been working on familiarizing her with our firearms for years. Proper stance, making every shot count, etc. She does very well in practice on stationary targets, but in real situations has always forgot everything and blazed away. But aside from forgetting to plant herself, she did really well to hit a rapidly moving target and, once she started shooting anyway, to keep the muzzle pointed downrange and her eyes on the threat. And when the fox lay dead she had the presence of mind to clear the weapon and put it on safe. That's a first for her!

I'm pretty proud of that woman of mine! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Now you have to take her prize to the taxidermist to have is mounted and give it to her for Christmas next as a reminder of her first kill.
