I am not sure that a FEL is a project someone who is using a torch to cut and weld with should tackle. A torch is definitely a good thing to have during a project like that but gas welding takes a little practice to get right, especially on welds that will be subjected to loads like a FEL receives.
If your profiecent at gas welding, excuse my bad manners for making rude assumptions.
Any type of acetylene, propane, or Mapp gas will probably work. I prefer Acetylene, but it has it's disadvantages, especially for the uninformed. However it puts out a little more heat than the other gaes, and I am set up for it, so I just keep using it.
Any of the big name torches will work in a project like this, Victor, Smith, etc. The better setups are more expensive, but are easier to get parts for if and when they ever need repair. The cheaper ones don't have that advantage, so if your buying it for the long haul, spend the money.

If it were me , I'd weld with a mig that was big enough to get 100% penetration.. or with a big stick welder. I'd save the gas for heating and cutting. not that a good proficient gas welder couldn't do it.. i just think it may be easier done as arc welding.. etc..

I don't think MAPP gas would be hot enough...
Except for emergency field repairs, welding is best done with stick or MIG (TIG would do it too, but you'd need a big torch and/or multiple passes). Soundguy hit it right on the head...you need a good solid full penetration weld.

The biggest problem you are going to have with gas welding is going to be heat dissipation. I do quite a bit of it in the natural gas industry. In the long welds you are going to need for a fel. you are going to have a lot of warping. I would not try any thing smaller than a three tip. To get started you basically have to start melting the pieces. You would be better with a cheap buzz box or mig. Not only will you suffer less heat damage you will finish about 5 times faster.

Gas welding is great for tubing in an airframe, but for heavy metal use arc. Not even a choice except for emergency.

Mig or stick weld depending on the size of the project and the available welder. Again, like metal cutting, it is a case of the right tool for the job...
