Why are so many mugs, glasses, cups and so on narrower at the bottom than the top, making them easier to tip over? I get the bits about stacking and cup holders, but even at that, why not weight the bottoms? And with some, the taper is so extreme they almost fall over on their own even when empty. Are they trying to help the paper towel makers sell more?

I have some Superbowl Budweiser glasses that have that shape, but they are pretty thick at the bottom and tipping is not a problem, at least the first four or five times I fill mine. Perhaps the shape, besides being a bit more aesthetically pleasing than an untapered glass, is more amenable to being removed from the mold?

Around here if you ask the right person and they know who you are it goes for $2/pint and up...

Shine is sold at local liquor stores but you have to be nuts to buy it. It cost more than a good quality bourbon and is pure torture to drink even watered down well.

Not exactly the same thing...

As for palatability...I never have been able to understand why people want to "acquire a taste" for single malt scotch...something that smells like a cross between horse manure and toe jam...!

Whereas I enjoy a good single malt but they are made in different ways and some need a drop of water to convert them to nectar.
On the other hand I find bourbon similar to swallowing red hot fish hooks and razor blades.

To the original question, maybe to fit in car cupholders? The big ones with small bottoms fit in my van but the other big ones do not fit well.

Larger surface area so the aroma can enhance the taste, this is the case with certain alcoholic beverage glasses although I diislike the euro type top heavy pilsner glasses.

The only shine I ever drank came from a liquor store and was branded Georgia Moon. As I remember, the taste reminded me of fresh cut grass.

You mean the smell of fresh cut grass or do you actually know what it tastes like ?

Not sure what "upstate" SC means but if you're familiar with the extreme NW part of SC you know there are/were a lot of apple and some peach orchards...just across the line in NE GA the area is known for it's "local" apple and peach brandies...it's almost a lost art (don't believe what you see on TV)...they are (or can be) as smooth as velvet and have a fantastic finish that you know for sure what it was made from...! but it's really known as "brandy" and not shine but it often comes from the same places...

BTW..."Why" is not a Topic...they sell special "no tip" mugs that are obviously way wider at the bottom...also splash proof that will ride on the dash...

Ha - having been a molding technician for ten years - - the mold required to produce a glass with a narrow bottom is a simple mold. Conversely - the mold required to produce a glass with a wide bottom is a much more complex mold. Initial cost of the mold - continued cost of maintenance - cost of higher trained staff to run the equipment and produce the product. Plus a lot of customer driven desires.
