Why you should change your oil

/ Why you should change your oil #221
I'm sure there are several ways that would work but it would be up to the corp lawyers to decide which way will work. The Lexus LFA has a very nice LCD dash. The only problem is that I could see people looking at it a little too much and not enough at where they are driving.

not much differenc ein only have 1 big turbo gauge on the console, vs ignoring all the other gauges like many do anyway.

i do like the idea of gauges coming to the front if there is an issue..

liek the message center on a gm that blinks special messages at you..

Bump....

/ Why you should change your oil #223
Hmmm? The thread goes almost four years without a post and then the OP bumps it? Feels like there is a story behind the bump. :)

Okay, I'll fess up on my truck, a 2002 Ranger. I use Mobil 1 oil and a K&N filter and usually change oil every 5,000 miles. The last couple of times I decided to stretch it to 7,500. Feeling a little guilty over that but it is Mobil 1 and 90% or more of miles are highway miles. Now have 162,500 miles on it and seems to be doing well, even if losing a little high-end power (Not like it had a lot to lose.)

Sunday's oil change took 2.5 hours because the dog-gone oil pan plug rounded off. I finally got it off with visegrips. Was able to file enough burrs off and shape it back to take a socket but I'm picking up a new plug before my next oil change.

The one time I had the oil changed (it was in for a new wheel bearing) the stupid dealer mechanic shifted something so the oil filter rubbed on something going on and coming off. I initially thought he had cross threaded it. I destroyed the filter trying to take it off. I wound up having it towed to an independent shop with a good reputation. They said the pump had been shifted a little and all they had to do was loosen an adjustment bolt and slide it a little for filters to clear? I never knew that could be adjusted. The one time, the one time I let somebody change my oil and it cost me a $150 to get it fixed (and most of that was a tow bill.)

So DP, what's the story behind the bump? :)

There is a guy with a 5.4 that is making metal like my BIL'S sid.

My story is that I just bought an '06 CUT with say 500 hrs (and a new inst cluster). I do an oil change right away and temp needle doesn't get out of blue zone. New t-stat and fresh oil. I get 2 hrs of seat time and the oil is already 'time to change'-dark.

I can blame cold running partly for making the oil so dirty, or faster, but this one wasn't parked inside and for all I know hasn't had an oil change since it's been out of warranty. (3 yrs @ 50 hr/yr = 150 hrs?) Pins and little hardware bits don't look like they've ever been lubed, but it does start and run great.

Anyway, expect me to change oil again in another five or ten hrs and call it a 'rinse/repeat'. I'd like to think I bought it just in time to save it from the worst.

Thanks, missed this thread the first time around... Wonder if the owner was kin to my Father in law?? He just passed away recently. I took my mother in law car to be serviced... best guess, 15,000 miles since the last oil change!?!?!

Put synthetic oil in, plan to check it from now on... I don't think it was damaged too bad. Time will tell.

They had another mini-van towed away, leaking and burning way too much oil... makes a little more sense to me now. He wasn't an idiot, but didn't have extra money for oil changes (I guess?).

I change the oil AND filter in both the Jeep and tractor in spring. Both use synthetic.

Thanks DP. I hadn't connected those dots. Really sucks when an engine starts making metal and noises whether one maintains it or not. Seems like some just fail for some reason that is hard to understand. So far mine is holding together and I'm hoping to get another 90,000 miles out of it. Hope he comes out okay on it.

I don't know guys, a friend had one of those little Subaru trucks years ago, took it to have oil changed & they told him they got about a quart out of it.
He told them it was the first oil change since he got it, over 100,000 miles. I would never try that myself. He ran that truck for many more miles, not sure if he ever changed the oil again or not.
Now, how could this have happened w/o destroying the vehicle?

We have oil that can go 10,000+ miles, transmissions that are designed to never change the oil, brake pads that can go over 70,000 miles, and spark plugs that can go over 100,000 miles.

And a lot of the things that didn't last, have been eliminated, plug wires, cap and rotor, points and condenser.

All this predictably adds up to people completely forgetting about doing any maintenance on their cars.

Tires seem to be the only thing that hasn't improved as far as longevity. They may have even lost some. They certainly like us coughing up $800-$1000 for a set of tires.

I decided that it was time to change the shocks on the wife's 2003 Olds Bravada with 110K on it. Got the new ones, took off the old Bilstein original and they were still pressured up fine both front and rear. Ride quality is the same with the new ones so I hope the new Gabriel shocks work as long. I checked the original brake pads while I had the wheels off and they still had lots of pad left. At 100K I had the plugs and fan belt changed but it still has all the original hoses which the mechanic said all looked good.

The only thing that I have had to repair on that car is the water pump, a couple of windshields and 1 new set of tires in the 14 years of ownership (bought it in Oct 2002) Still running on the 2 nd set of tires and hope to get about another 10-15K out of them. It came with Michelin and that is what is on it now.

Well, the tire OEM's really haven't moved their tire technology from their heavy duty offerings to the auto and light truck realm. I typically will get well over 400,000 miles out of a set of drive tires on my commercial trucks, and over 200,000 miles on steer tires. Will still have 8-9/32 tread left and get $150 each for the old tires when I put on new ones. Sure, the heavy truck tires cost more, after all they are bigger and more plys and better tread compounds, but with what they deliver, they are far more cost effective than auto/pickup tires.

It holds 7qts and I got 6 out of it and another 1/2 qt in the filter. It had not used or lost any oil and I am fairly certain he did not check it because it took some effort to get the dipstick out. It was corroded in place.

Maybe......
It wasn't really bearing material.....
Maybe he had just stopped at the strip club and gotten an extra heavy load of glitter

Since I am now driving the ranger I will change the fluid in the back diff. And motor oil in the spring or when I have time.

Sorry to stray off topic but when do you guys do your first oil change on a brand new car? I did my 2015 Taurus at 1k miles and then again at 5k with 5k intervals after that.

We have a brand new Escape in the family now and it is approaching 2k and I haven't done the initial oil change. May try and do that today. Just don't know if I am being too ****.

I don't know what is about some of the younger generation and not understanding the need to change the oil in cars. I have two boys and have pounded it into them the importance and still they go too long and since they drive old oil burners often run them way too low on oil.

My youngest son has blown two engines before finally, I think he has learned. I think .. I didn't have to blow engines to get that from my dad's advice.

I do them at the normal interval. For me that's at 5000 miles.

I always have done the first oil and filter change on a NEW vehicle I have owned after maybe 300-400 miles but the last new one I purchased was back in Y2K (!!!), BTW, I went back to the OP about the Ford originally mentioned...I could not believe the miles driven over a 13 month period...18,136??? I still have the Y2K GMC I purchased new and the attachment shows the current mileage.
