Why no Ecoboost in the F250?

Running climate control is a juice sucker. I find it quite funny that police departments want to go electric. I don't see that working out well...

Doubt the cop on the street WANTS to go electric. But his bosses - the county commissioners, city fathers, etc. no doubt are pushing this transition to satisfy the tree huggers who are constantly whining about using fossil fuels.

A couple of points, it seems to me as a general rule a gas engine will make more horsepower compared to a diesel of the same size. Part of the reason for this is diesels aren’t designed to rev. Because of high compression they just have a heavy reciprocating assembly and much of 3000 rpms is as high as they go. A high torque number at high rpm’s gives a high horsepower number which is where gas engines can get big numbers.

The diesel vs gas engine debate goes on over and over on this board. In a high load setting is where a diesel shines, this is where its efficiency and durability make it better. Driving around hauling air in an empty pickup bed is where the gas engine is better.

Pretty easy to dust the cops today as they ( for the most part) drive weenie vehicles but the bottom line is, pretty hard to outrun a Motorola.
Which reminds me of the late 70's/early 80's when our local police department was saddled with some sorry car with a straight 6 that topped out about 78mph. I was talking to one of them regarding why they didn't bother chasing me down on my motorcycle and giving me a ticket for excessive speed. He said something to the effect that their cars were such dogs that the old saying about you can't beat Motorola no longer applied. He looked rather sad and like he was longing for the old days. The guy was maybe 30 years old. :p

Anyhow, he also said that most likely I'd kill myself driving that fast, so they'd just let nature take its course and there would be less paperwork.

When they run the budget numbers, the maintenance will be a lot lower on the electric cars.

Also, once the cops get behind an electric and find that they out accelerate anything they've ever drive before, they are quiet, stealthy rolling down an alley, etc. they might just like them.

I'd be more concerned about the climate control in the winter sucking juice than the summer.

And as others have mentioned, if they don't get take home cars and have to swap out every shift, that may become a problem. Or, as I mentioned before, if they have take home cars like our police department, who's gonna pay for the installation of charge points at the officer's home. What if they rent an apartment or house? Can they make the landlord install a charge point?

Those kinds of questions will be hashed out in the near future.

I have one of the first F150 ecoboosts, peak torque is 2500 RPM, I've never had it turning more than 3000 RPM pulling the same loads (much faster) than my diesel F250 did.

Not sure what this screaming you refer to is.
If you are towing 15-20+K in a 150, you are not only wrong, but extremely dangerous (not to mention illegal). The 150 is rated for a max towing of 5-11K depending how its equipped, the 250SD is rated up to ~24K. Compare apples with apples.

Especially since now in CA the government is asking folks NOT to charge their EV's. More lawlessness since the cops can't go anywhere😁😉🙃 Besides, their peak power is generated by, wait for it, Fossil Fuels!

When did he say he was towing over 15,000 lbs? Most people have no need to haul such huge loads, ever.

Actually the 3.5L ecoboost can be rated up to 14,000 lbs towing. But typically ~12,000 in most trims.

I was referring to some if what Dieselcrawler was talking about

Honestly an engine I would like to see in development would be something ~4.5L i-6 pushrod gasoline with sequential turbos, variable cam timing, and both direct and port injection. No crazy boost, just enough for 350-400 HP across a really wide powerband with excellent response and low end torque.

GM's forthcoming i-6 might be close to this, eager to learn more. The bad rumour I am hearing is that it will have a complex system for variable compression ratio.... please don't, GM.

Just to chime in,
my 2019 F250 6.2 gets 12.? normal back and forth.
10.? if I dont get behind idiots and can plan hills with a 6K+ camper. 9 when they slow down -15 going uphill.
Distance open highway if its hilly, 16-17. South of Maryland, 18.
