I was just wondering why there seem to be so many Canadians with Massey gear. You friends north of the border number just a paltry 20 million I believe in total population, but seem to comprise a large number of participants in this forum. Is it because of the English origins of the brand--the Massey part anyway (right?)? Can anyone tell me something about the design and manufacturing history of MF? My dealer recently said something about some of it moving from the UK to Brazil, and he said it wasn't working out well. "They can't replicate the craftsmen in England."

MF is popular all over the world, just not as big in the US. Their agco and challenger brands are a little more familiar in the US though. My MF was built in France, but their are models from all over europe sold as MF's. The small ones are Japanese I believe.

MF are beeing made in a few diff places. CUT and SCUT's are from Japan and the 400, 500 and 2600HD are made in Brazil (mostly). Most of the larger models are from france. The 2600 utility is make in india. All verry good models and verry dependable. As far as why so many in Canada im not shure, maybe they just like the MF brand there.

Maybe because that is where they started.

MF is a Canadian company founded by Daniel Massey in 1847.

 There are a lot of older MFs around, that's for sure!

We're starting to see a few of the newer MF products here in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia but JD / Kubota, and more recently Kioti, are amongst the most favourite, mainly due to location of dealerships.

PS, there's a whopping 35 million of us now,:thumbsup:

I think it is the same reason JD is so popular around the US. That is where Massey originated. JD originated in Moline Ill. Both are quality equipment, in my opinion..

All, thanks for your replies. I didn't know that Massey and Harris too were Canadians. It was interesting to learn about all the locations where various tractors are made. :D ;)

I was just wondering why there seem to be so many Canadians with Massey gear.

There are lots of the old ones around. They're cheap and reliable and start well in winter. Parts are readily available and anyone can work on them. The 35/135 series are powerful and small, a versatile combination.

Currently Massey Ferguson's Indian affiliate TAFE builds excellent gear-driven mid-sized tractors and adds the 2600 series for MF. Iseki, a fine Japanese manufacturer, supplies many of the compacts. LG, the Korean giant, builds most of the current hydro models.

But my Massey Dealer suppliess parts for my '95 TAFE, and I suspect he can get stuff for my 1981 Bolens as well, through the Iseki connection.

Iseki builds the Hydro models as well. I'm pretty sure LG has no connection with AGCO.

As far as I know the builds are:

Simplicity- Lawn & garden
Iseki - GC's, 1500, 1600 & Diesel ZT's
Tafe-2600 light duty
Cararro-3600
MF Brazil- 2600HD
MF France -5400, 6400, 7400, 8600
Jackson-Challenger Track & articulated tractors, Manure spreaders too. Maybe the Applicators as well?
Combines & hay is in house (Hesston, KS) or companies they have bought share in.

To the best of my memory anyway.

My guess would be they were easily available here in Ontario, because the early Masseys (Massey Harris) were built in Brampton Ontario right up through the Massey Ferguson era into the early 80s before that plant closed. There aren't a lot of Masseys around from the late 80s thru the 90s, but the new models are picking up steam and are starting to repopulate the Ontario countryside. My family has always had Massey tractors, my dad and I collect Massey Harris 30s, we have an FE35 and have had tea20s as well. I have had a 1548, which I traded for a 5455, and last year I bought a 1533 I like the Massey tractors and what really like is the great finance programs they are running, thats my take on it, here are some pics of my tractors.

I just got back from another business trip to Bangalore India and while I was there I made a mental note of the different tractor brands seen either on urban worksites or out in the country (Karnataka province).

Which do you think was the most plentiful brand (from what I saw)?

Mahindra? nope

I saw more Massey Fergusons than anything. Mahindra 2nd.

I also saw 1 John Deere, 1 Eicher, no TAFEs, no Kubotas, no New Hollands, no Case IH.

ALL backhoes were JCB.

Hah! I figure it's because that pretty red paint matches the Maple Leaf flag of theirs! :)

That is the 5455 that I wanted! I couldn't find a droop nose in my price range.

Don't TAFE's wear Massey-Ferguson colours in India and TAFE outside? Good tractors, whatever they call them.
