Why is MF so big in Canada?

I was just wondering why there seem to be so many Canadians with Massey gear. You friends north of the border number just a paltry 20 million I believe in total population, but seem to comprise a large number of participants in this forum. Is it because of the English origins of the brand--the Massey part anyway (right?)? Can anyone tell me something about the design and manufacturing history of MF? My dealer recently said something about some of it moving from the UK to Brazil, and he said it wasn't working out well. "They can't replicate the craftsmen in England."

MF is popular all over the world, just not as big in the US. Their agco and challenger brands are a little more familiar in the US though. My MF was built in France, but their are models from all over europe sold as MF's. The small ones are Japanese I believe.

MF are beeing made in a few diff places. CUT and SCUT's are from Japan and the 400, 500 and 2600HD are made in Brazil (mostly). Most of the larger models are from france. The 2600 utility is make in india. All verry good models and verry dependable. As far as why so many in Canada im not shure, maybe they just like the MF brand there.:thumbsup:

MF is a Canadian company founded by Daniel Massey in 1847.

:laughing: There are a lot of older MFs around, that's for sure!

We're starting to see a few of the newer MF products here in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia but JD / Kubota, and more recently Kioti, are amongst the most favourite, mainly due to location of dealerships.

PS, there's a whopping 35 million of us now, :laughing::thumbsup:

I think it is the same reason JD is so popular around the US. That is where Massey originated. JD originated in Moline Ill. Both are quality equipment, in my opinion.:thumbsup:.

All, thanks for your replies. I didn't know that Massey and Harris too were Canadians. It was interesting to learn about all the locations where various tractors are made.

There are lots of the old ones around. They're cheap and reliable and start well in winter. Parts are readily available and anyone can work on them. The 35/135 series are powerful and small, a versatile combination.

Currently Massey Ferguson's Indian affiliate TAFE builds excellent gear-driven mid-sized tractors and adds the 2600 series for MF. Iseki, a fine Japanese manufacturer, supplies many of the compacts. LG, the Korean giant, builds most of the current hydro models.

But my Massey Dealer suppliess parts for my '95 TAFE, and I suspect he can get stuff for my 1981 Bolens as well, through the Iseki connection.
