Well, prisons are full of people that should had help long before they ended up there. Probably been cheaper for society than cost of crime and prisontime.
I recently read a book entitled "Life at the Bottom", written by an English Psychiatrist, Theodore Dalrymple, who deals with drug addicts, criminals, mentally ill and very poor patients. To make a long story short, he says that their plight is do to their world view, i.e. how they look at and approach life. He also says that "crime is the cause of poverty, not the other way around". In my opinion, it boils down to your sense of responsibility, not only to yourself, but to your family and your community.
