I'm putting a new pto pump and control valve on my tractor with a add on oil reservoir to run my front end loader and a friend of mine told me that I didn't need to put on a return filter as long as I used new clean oil. I told him he was wrong. So who's right him or me.

You are...and you know it or you would not have asked the question:thumbsup: Tell him "thank you for your help" and do the correct thing.

While its true, you may not NEED it, but I'd ask myself..."Self, how expensive IS the filter anyways..??"

most times the few dollars is just good insurance

Really, to do it right you need filter/screen before the pump, and each component. Also a return filter going to tank. If pump fails, filters catch it before ruining the valve, etc. Same holds true for any other component in the system. I f you follow this rule, you are safe, this side of a war.

Trader,

I was always taught, anytime you move a fluid...you filter it.
