No offense taken. I was just trying to offer another option-less money, easier maint. & more flexible. And, there's no question you can mow more open ground faster with a 60" deck than a 40" deck. Actually, I sold my Gravelies a few months ago preparatory to buying a BSC 850 which I hope to do later this year. In the mean time I'll have to make do with an actual lawn mower & the TC40 with an old bush hog - ugh.

One question-have you ever asked yourself if you will ever want to do something else in the future (other than mowing) with the equipment you are looking at (ie. the "Best" mowing machine)?

Yes I've considered that and the answer is basically "no." I've got 2 real tractors, this would be a mower and a trailer puller used to replace those same duties performed by the Cub.

And because that is my answer, I think that makes my search applicable to many homeowners who are looking for a lawn tractor to mow their lawn. We probably mow more than many "typical" garden tractor owners, and we probably have more diverse terrain than most, but that might just prove that if it will work for me, then it will work for 95% of the people out there. And granted, most would not choose to go for the BEST unless they had special circumstances that demanded it, but I think some others out there are probably interested in quality.

I have the answer!

VENTRAC makes the best garden tractors.

I've played with many of the brands talked about, tested several, and the test of the Ventrac just blew me away. In the middle of the test I asked for the best price. They undercut the prices we were talking about on the phone and I wrote the check. $9850.00 for the LT3000 tractor, with a 52" finish mower and a 48" front bucket, delivered to my door. I had a bid on a Steiner at $10,000 for a model 415 with a similar size deck and no bucket, and that did not include delivery. The very odd looking Ventrac is a better tractor than the Steiner 415 if you don't need all the implements that the 415 has available because the Ventrac 3000 has a fairly limited number of implements available for it. Going up in size, I think the Ventrac 4100 is far better than the Steiner 415 and probably better than the Steiner 430. I did not test the Ventrac 4200 series.

On the modest slopes I was able to do "figure 8s" without any stability issues, I also did some "U" turns on some of the other slopes with no problems. I did a couple "U" turns on a slope where I got a 10 wheel dump truck stuck! Even with turf tires, the tractor wheels never spun or slipped on the slopes. I did not try to cross the steep slopes, but I did go up and down every one with complete control.

The tractor drove right under the small trees and mowed up to the trunks, the 16" turning radius had the tractor spinning around the trees easily. Mowing around irregular landscaping beds will be a breeze and I suspect that mowing time will drop considerably becuase this tractor will turn a circle inside of the turning radius of my Cub Cadet. It is not a ZTR but then again, a ZTR could not manage my terrain.

The 21hp engine had more than enough power to pull the tractor up the steepest grades with the mower deck spinning . . . without anything bogging down or straining. My Cub Cadet was the only traditional garden tractor I found that could climb the hill with the mower still cutting, but you could hear the strain in the engine and the wheels (with 75# weights & chains) spun on every trip up the steep parts of the grade.

The hydaulics are amazingly powerful. The downforce power easily lifted the front wheels of the tractor right off the ground. Using the front bucket I was able to dig up and grade clay soil, I also dug some 1/2 buried rip rap out of the draining ditch. (Remember guys, this is a little garden tractor not a CUT).

The implements are front mounted, switching implements is a 3 minute job requiring no tools. Not as simple as the guys with Power Tracs claim their implement switches are, but still a piece of cake to swap.

I really like the hand and foot controls, giving you the option to use either or interchange them as the situation arose or changed.

I also liked the ability to select auto-neutral or to not use it, so the tractor will go back to neutral automatically if you take your hand or foot off the controls, or stay running at the set speed, depending on which setting you've chosen.

On the flat areas of the property the Ventrac preformed flawlessly, making nice cuts in the grass and leaving a lawn "stripe" due to the roller system on the trailing edge of the mower deck.

All the switches are water proof. Oil filters are easy to reach. Engine compartment is wide open for easy checks of levels.

I was literally overwhelmed by the quality & performance of the unit.

Just a question. What is the difference between a subcompact CUT and a garden tractor ?

I would say that a SUB-CUT is a small diesel tractor capable of using NON-proprietary implements that are made by numerous 3rd party vendors capable of both constructing and then later maintaining your landscaping. A SUB-CUT is the bridge between a compact utility tractor and a lawn mowing tractor, commonly called a garden tractor. A garden tractor is limited to proprietary implements. A garden tractor is not designed to do landscape construction, but is suited to do landscape maintainence. I have been told that 85% of all garden tractors are strictly used as lawn mowers, the next most popular powered implement is a snowblower. Most other garden tractor implements requiring power, such as a tiller, are self powered with a separate engine (not always true) and not powered by the tractor engine.

Sub-Cuts can basically do anything a larger tractor can do, but they do it in smaller doses. Garden tractors are not designed for the use of and in most cases are simply not capable of utilizing things such as FELs or BH. They don't have the power, weight for true ground engaging implements, etc. I would also say that the designer & manufacturer of the typical GT does not INTEND for those tractors to do heavy work, they basically design them to do mowing chores, pulling a cart, blowing some snow, and typical light duty jobs.

At least that is MY OPINION on the differences between a GT and a SUB-CUT.

Bob ... as the owner of a machine that didn't come near making your list ... I'm having some trouble with a 10K machine for mowing only.

Keep in mind, whenever I can afford to be extravagant, I usually do it ...

I realize your stated and re-stated special needs, but for some perspective ... Carver is selling a B7800 with r4s and a loader for only 1100 bucks more (this week only the add says) than the LT3000.

Did u order the cage?

Doug

I had every intention of ordering the roll cage, but after driving it I opted not to order it for 2 reasons. First, the tractor is so rock stable that I couldn't believe it. I thought the Steiner was a ground hugger, but this felt as good or better. Second, when I drove it down to my valley area it became very apparent that the roll cage would hit the tree branches preventing me from mowing up to trees easily. With the front mount deck, I could do it, but it would not be as easy without it. Mind you, if the tractor felt unstable and I still felt it would be the best choice, then I would have ordered the cage.

Also, I had no intention of buying the 48" bucket, but for the price I was quoted, it was too good of a deal to pass up. I also figured it would help with snow removal in the winter and allow me to clean up the snow/ice near the front door where the larger tractors don't fit very well.

As for a 10K mowing machine . . . have you priced out any of the larger JD garden tractors lately??? Some of those run a couple grand HIGHER than what I just paid and exceed the price of a nice CUT. Toro & N.H. have large units that don't quite get up to the 10K price mark but get close enough to scare the heck out of that price. And none of those units are nearly as stable on the slopes, none of them have the 16" turning radius, none is as turf friendly, and none has the traction of a 4wd/articulated/osillating tractor.
