The HST's take some HP to run. Mahindra has the 2555 and 2655 HST without a cab and it's a 55 HP engine but only 43 PTO HP. The same tractor in a TYM is the T554 and that is the same HP ratings with a Yanmar engine.

Both cab models, not sure about the comparable open station but the Kioti NX5510 is the same way, 55 engine HP and 43 PTO HP and the Kubota L5460 is hydro and 54 engine HP and 46 PTO HP.

To get above 50 PTO HP you will most likely be looking at a shuttle or power shuttle shift tractor.

The 2555 and 2655 should be able to handle heavy round bales. Ballast the rear tires and it can lift a ton of wood pellets on forks without any problem. Add counterweight on the rear too if you're concerned or a set of 3 point bale forks and always carry a bale on the back before you pick up one on the front.

The only ones I'm aware of are the Kubota L6060 that is still being produced, and the International Harvester Hydro series produced in the 1970's and 1980's.

Given how the standard pressure for hydraulic systems has increased over the years, I wouldn't be surprised if the International Harvesters would be heavier and have higher engine HP, but a FEL lifting capacity not much more than some modern CUTs.

The IH Hydros were definitely heavier w/ higher hp (70 and 80) but as w/ most older two wheel drive tractors, the front ends were weak by today's standards. I still have a IH, 2WD 484, 50 hp utility weighing 5000 lbs w/o the loader, more that any current compact. The factory loader is still loaded at 2200 lbs.

Wish I could recall which version of the IH Hydro tractors my late grandfather had (it may have been a 484) though I do remember from experience it was very limited (compared to modern loaders). However, it was still enough to lift four to five 55 gallon drums of water plus one grandson to transfer the water into other barrels placed in the garden.....

I'll admit standing on a sheet of plywood laid across the tines of a pallet fork surrounded by barrels of water isn't the safest place to ride on a tractor (even if the ground clearance is sufficient to clear a person), but it sure was a fun -- not to mention the unobstructed view......

Your request for 50PTO horse power is really throwing things off if you are just looking for a heavier HST to move round bails. A Mahindra 3550 HST weighs in at over 6000lbs with the loader and could easily be ballasted to over 7000lbs. Has a loader that lifts 2700lbs to full height.

I'm would think that there would be others as well, if the 50 PTO horse power is not "really" the qualifying factor.

maybe this will help.............he would be going from a Strong 65 PTO hp to less than 50 so that in itself would be monumental then to drop 2000 to 2500 lbs is another deal - have you ever mowed with a 7 foot RMM and less than 50pto hp...........that's not fun!!!! im talking weeds/grass tall as the tractor not some grazed pasture that needs topped, we get 35 to 40 inches of rain around here so its not thin when you go to mow it - not to mention row crop height vs step through utility height, that's another can of worms...........

his main use would be utility, hauling things around and loader work and then mowing fields of CRP around the edges etc.....his wife using it a lot while he is doing other things - that's the reason for the hst........personally I would teach my wife to run whatever we got but that is his decision and what he wants and I do understand it for loader work, an HST is a no brainer, shuttle is not bad but its not HST - yes the bigger older IH were good for that time but their age is a concern if you could even find one in descent shape. The Mahindra 3550 wouldn't be bad as far as weight goes but you are under 40hp with the HST@pto so that's definitely not going to work - he doesn't want to have to buy all new implements and mow with a smaller mower either so up over 50hp was a low as we figured a guy would want to go w/out feeling like you are on an 8n ford with a 5 foot rmm clutching it every 15 feet trying to cut weeds and keep from killing it that is nothing more maddening than not enough power and wasting time.

I will keep working on him, if I needed a tractor in that range I would be getting a power shift with left hand reverser - not sure what a syncro shift is but I presume something similar? I would not even bat an eye at these little utility boogers I would get a bigger tractor period for many reasons.

Thanks for all the options but I just don't see much with an HST over the 50PTO range. there are TONS of great tractors with syncro/power shift trannies in that range and even slightly used ones with great prices as well but he isn't interested so he will have to make a choice.

The Yanmar YT359 has 52 PTO HP and has the iHMT transmission that’s more efficient, easier to service, and just as easy to use as a HST. Just like driving a car. Very wife friendly.

Personally, I think 50 pto hp and 1 ton "true working load" (not "at the pins capacity"), kind of establishes the practical, cost-effective design limits of a so-called "compact" tractor. Added lifting power and the kind of attachments needing all that pto hp call for a bigger, heavier, stronger tractor platform, which is pretty much what a utility tractor is. I would be suspicious of a souped-up compact tractor with huge lift capacity and/or extreme pto power in a light-duty platform like most of today's compacts. The Kub M62 is an example of what a well-engineered compact with those capabilities might look like, but it's indeed heavy and expensive, even if you didn't get the backhoe.

Thanks for the clarification. Much easier for people to make recommendations when a better over all picture is provided.
