Who has a Concealed Carry?

When I was 19 or 20 I knew three guys that had carry permits. All three of them were loners with chips on their shoulders. Personally, they were creepy dudes that made me uneasy. And... they were constantly boasting of being NRA members. :p I guess that impression stuck with me for a long time. Lots of NRA members strike me on the gun issues the same way PETA people do on animal issues... they both gots their agendas to the point of being fanatical! :)

Of course, not all, and probably not most, NRA members are whacko loners with chips on their shoulders.... are they?

I'm not a member of NRA but I do believe all groups will have a few people that are a bit strange and over the top but not all people in that group are. I like what the NRA stands for but just haven't joined yet. Guess I'll have to look into joining. Maybe I'll run into your ol' buddies:D.

How many of you gun guys are NRA members? If not, what the problem? The NRA is guilty of sending too much junk mail but beyond that they are a great voice for our 2A rights.

I'm a member, but only because the local pistol & rifle club requires NRA membership to be a member. Otherwise, while I appreciate their efforts to protect the 2A, they also seem a bit too fanatical for my taste.

I'm a new NRA member - joined just prior to the recent Supreme Court decision. They may be fanatical, but they're fanatical to my side of the argument. I figure the other side is just as rabid, so I'm entitled to big-dogs on my side. I don't own a handgun.

That's the problem, no one wants to meet in the middle ground.

That said, I only wish those who are "fanatical" on being anti gun would actually learn about guns and the subject, other than trying to take such draconian measures due to a few bad apples (there are pros and cons to having such a free society as ours).

Agreed. Both sides certainly have their extremes.

As I get older, I do tend to drift to the right of center on many issues, but hopefully never so far that I lose sight of the other side.

I certainly don't blame anyone who wants to get a permit. And I can see good reasons for some people to carry a weapon. But I just can't get too worked up about it. As part of my job, I had to carry one for nearly 25 years. I never shot anyone; never shot at anyone. Now I can carry in any state, if I want to stay qualified. And all I'd have to do is go to the range and qualify once a year. That's certainly easy to do. But I don't do it. Yes, I have loaded guns in my home; have had all my life, but I don't carry one anymore, nor do I want to carry one. It's inconvenient, if not uncomfortable, and what are the odds of needing it? Yep, it can happen that I'll need it some day and not have it. But that's pretty slim odds.

The stories about the times when someone needed his weapon and/or used it are so rare that they are big news so you hear and/or read about each one. And that makes more people think they need a permit. Actually, the number of accidental discharges and accidental injuries far exceed the number of incidents in which a permit holder actually uses his weapon to prevent a crime or protect himself or someone else.

So, yes, if you can qualify for a permit, and you want a permit, go for it. Then please be careful to take good care of the weapon so it stays in good working order, and be careful to avoid accidents.

Bird, well said and I agree totally. Carry one and you always have to worry about all the consequences all the time and all the responsibilities that come with it. I'm taking my chance with lightening when I go outside and where I live getting mugged has about the same chance, although vigilance is always important. I use it on my place occasionally and I make sure it is not at all concealed for the fact it has to be a "DETERRENT" for defensive purposes rather than offensive. All that said I think, concealed carry is more of a "privilege" rather than "right".

Yes, and ironically, her husband in that movie, played by Michael Gross, also played in another movie, portraying one of the most fanatical man in FBI history (who died in a gun battle against the law).

Yea, Reba & Michael Gross were fanatics about their weapons in that they appreciated their capabilities and knew how to use them. My kind of people.

My favorite is Tremors 2, funny movie.

I am a member of NRA , own some handguns and rifles, but don't have a carry permit yet.

JC,

The 2nd Amendment says it is a "Right." ;)

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

"I'm a member, but only because the local pistol & rifle club requires NRA membership to be a member. Otherwise, while I appreciate their efforts to protect the 2A, they also seem a bit too fanatical for my taste."

The men commonly referred to as the "Founding Fathers" were, during their time, called "fanatics". Sometimes to keep what you have and to do what is right a little "fanaticism" is in order.

Nuff' said. :)
