Matt,

It's good that you learned the way you did. I totally agree about belts being bought, I have witnessed it more times than I can count. I hold a 2nd Dan in Tang Soo Do and used to be an instructor. I have more trophies from tournaments than I can count and a couple grand championships but they have nothing to do with real world situations. If you want some good reading on a style that is completely about real world situations yet is still traditional, pick up any book by Dr. Maasaki Hatsumi or Stephen K. Hayes. I study their style and can attest to it's effectiveness first hand. Stephen Hayes did a mock hostage situation where he had to rescue a hostage and a navy seal team had to also rescue the same hostage. Stephen Hayes did it by himself with less casualties and was virtually undetected.

BTW, my apologies, you obviously have studied a little differently than 99% of the martial artists out there.

Now I can carry in any state, if I want to stay qualified. And all I'd have to do is go to the range and qualify once a year.

And I think that is a reasonable and prudent law that could result in a (retired) professional performing a public service by helping in certain situations. As you stated, I also agree with it being an individual choice of the retired officer. It should not be forced on the retired officer. I do like that Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) has introduced legislation for that would allow state and local officers to carry their firearms on an aircraft. NAPO is lobbying in favor of this legislation. I like the idea of more "good guys" possibly being armed on my flights just in case. I hope Senator Reid's efforts come to fruition. This also shows that not all politicians with a "D" following their name fail to see the potential good that can come from firearms.

When you said about accidental discharges and such a article in Guns and Ammo came to my mind. They listed the stats for all weapon discharges of the New York City Police Department. I wish I could find the copy to post it online. The stats were atrocious. This is from a Internationally known police department who qualifies there officers every six months to a year. My fiancee' and I are looking at getting concealed carry permits. She needs the permit more then I do. She subjects herself to going to work at 3 am and were she works is not one of the most safe places in the county. Another thing is the fact you just do not know what you will come across anymore. With only three sheriffs officers covering the west end of the county at any given time help is usually anywhere but close. I do not need her dealing with some idiot at 3 am on a back road going to work with no protection. Call it paranoia or call it being prepared and proactive. Either way I would rather her be safe. I would also have to say the way people are now to when I was a little kid have changed a lot. You just do not know what people are going to do anymore. It is not the day and age of trusting everyone and leaving your cars and houses unlocked anymore. Do not get me wrong there are places that are still like that but they seem to be few and far in between. Are neighbor had an incident about 2 months ago with a guy and his son poaching deer on his property. When he blocked them in the driveway they proceeded to pull a rifle on him and ram his truck. The area he is in would have been a long wait for the police so he left them go. I guess everyone has there own opinion. I also believe that if you are carrying a gun you need to be trained and educated too. Well I will stop mumbling now.

Charlie, west Loudon - say Hillsboro? Just curious, I am in Fauquier but I worked near IAD for years. I think the problem of open country is everywhere the same. The cop will not get to your house in five minutes if you call 911. You have to have your own lines of defense; dogs and guns.

Anyway, interesting discussion about martial arts. I think any idiot who learns mae geri and oi/gyaku tsuki can participate in a street fight - but what matters is what I call a switch. Responsible and decent person does not take lightly things like braking knees and elbows, but in a street fight, that's what may help you win. The switch is the availability to block the culture, education and responsibility for consequences and fight for your life. The martial art techniques are simple and easy and take just a little bit of practice - but to be able to use them to the full extend is the hardest part of it all.

My 0.02 only, of course:)

That reminds me this joke - warning, probably not politically correct

What's the difference between a terrorist and a woman suffering from PMS?

You can negotiate with a terrorist.

To answer the question per the thread, I got my licence in three different states, each time when I resided there.

I also believe that if you are carrying a gun you need to be trained and educated too.

The issue as I see it is that each state can be VERY different in their requirements in obtaining a conceal carry permit. One state I lived in, I applied for the permit, and it was in my mail box the next day. Only requirement was that I hadn't been in jail (to that extent).

I also agree with you.

Hmmm. I have worked many years on this. The mental part is way more important than the physical. Actually, infinitely more important. The "switch" is much more than that. It is also the ability to react without thought, making your actions faster than thought.

czechsonofagun,

We are in northwest Loudoun outside of Lovettsville. I also work for the county and know very well the officers are far and few in between. I like the idea of karate and self defense classes too. It is not a bad way to go.
