I got my CC permit in 1975 in New York state. Not a paranoid person but like the option and Right to carry as needed depending where I go. Hope I never need to use it but will if need be and deal with it from there. I have only 1 life and some thug isn't going to take mine if I can help it.

I agree, but . . . first off, statistically speaking, you're much, much more likely to need or use the seat belt or ROPS than the firearm. And secondly, there's a much, much less chance of you accidentally hurting yourself or someone else with the seat belt or ROPS than with the firearm.

I agree with your stats Bird, although I believe in negligent discharges as opposed to accidental ones. Either way I believe that given proper respect and knowledge I will never actually need my ROPS, seat belt, or firearm, nor will I hurt anyone with them.

Thank you for the insight and care Bird, don't take this post negatively, just my thoughts.

I'm an experienced martial artist now with over 20 years of training. I've trained in Tae Kwon Do, Ju-Jitsu, Hapkido, and Judo and taught Israeli Gun Defense techniques. Even a Black Belt wouldn't help in the situation that Suzanna Gratia-Hupp was in or the man that had to defend his family with an assault rifle during the L.A. riots.

Matt,

I agree with everything you said except for this. Most of the arts you studied have been turned into sports and don't have as much to do with real world defense as they used to. They have been seriously watered down and Americanized. I too have trained for many years and believe as you do. Walk softly and carry a big stick.

I have a CT permit where it is required to keep it concealed at all times failure to do so could result in revocation, along with any other indiscretion such as entering a bar, being intoxicated entering certain public buildings and grounds. Many gray areas that could be construed in different ways.

I agree with Bird carrying a handgun everyday is inconvenient and uncomfortable and doing everyday errands with your kids creates an added twist. So I have a gun safe loaded with many of the most desirable carry guns, I just don't feel that threatened when I'm out and about, even though I do work in some rough areas at times.
That said, I will never let my CCP lapse/expire and do respect this great privilege/right.
Of course I always have available protection at home if needed.

I believe carrying a handgun in public is more of a privilege than a right as the high degree of responsibility and legal qualifications preclude many.
JB.

I think that depends on the teacher. ;)

That reminds me this joke - warning, probably not politically correct:

I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver cut right
in front of a pickup truck, causing him to have to drive on to the shoulder
to avoid hitting her. This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung
his arm out his window and "flipped" the woman off.

"Man, that guy is stupid," I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything to me in traffic, and I drive 48 miles each way every day to work.

That's 96 miles each day.

Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper.

Most of the bumper-to-bumper is on an 8-lane highway.

There are 7 cars every 40 feet for 32 miles.

That works out to be 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars.

Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper-to-bumper, I figure I pass at least another 4000 cars.

That brings the number to something like 36,000 cars that I pass every day.

Statistically, females drive half of these.
That's 18,000 women drivers!

In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has PMS.

That's 642.

According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life as dissatisfying or unrewarding.

That's 449.

According to the National Institute of Health, 22% of all females have seriously considered suicide or homicide.

That's 98.

And 34% describe men as their biggest problem.

That's 33.

According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females carry weapons, and this number is increasing.

That means that EVERY SINGLE DAY, I drive past at least one female that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem, has seriously considered suicide or homicide, has PMS, and is armed.

Flip her off? ...... I think not.

Prokop,

First off, you make me laugh, that was funny.

Second, what is a grown man doing reading Cosmo?

I think that depends on the teacher. ;)

It does. The whole time I was studying martial arts I only went to one tournament. I earned 3rd place in forms, 3rd place in sparring, and 1st place in weapons. I also learned something that broke my heart. There are a lot of schools out there that basically sells belts. If you pay you get your next color belt. It takes less than 2 years in some places to get a Black Belt. The only thing that does is instill false confidence. Belts should be EARNED not given to a student so they don't quit. There are a lot of people that think being a Black Belt makes them invincible. They bought their belt. The ones that earned theirs don't brag about it.

In response to Wayne County Hose, I learned all but the Tae Kwon Do and gun defense from my father. He learned from his father. The Tae Kwon Do I learned from a retired Army Colonel. None was Americanized or watered down unless you count learning in the English language Americanized. And I learned each art independently of one another. Anyhow I can imagine instances where martial arts can help in situations like in the OP's video such as being able to identify the situation quickly, and reacting quickly. That may help me escape but to go head on with a calm and collective man shooting unarmed civilians with too much space inbetween us would not be wise and counterintuitive of my survival training if I was unarmed. Being armed would allow me to at least change the odds and even out the battle ground. Although I am trained to take an assailant's weapon be it a gun, knife, stick, kerambet, ssahng jeol bahng, etc. I know there is a time and place. There is also a situation; each being different.

I STRONGLY BELIEVE the paraphrasing of Wayne County Hose "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far" -Theodore Roosevelt

Actually, the number of accidental discharges and accidental injuries far exceed the number of incidents in which a permit holder actually uses his weapon to prevent a crime or protect himself or someone else.

I'd be interested in seeing any statistics that validate that statement. Where can we find a running tally of crimes that have been prevented or were limited by the presence of an armed permit holder? It's hard to say you "agree with the statistics" when none have even been given. Are there any statistics that show how many accidents haven't happened because the gun-owner had been properly trained in the course of obtaining their permit?

It's important to realize that we're occupying a small portion of time in our country's history. If we do not respect the manner by which our liberty has been ensured, it'll certainly be lost. (This is not 2nd amendment alone, rather any right or liberty that could be lost due to a government gone wild.)

Possessing a permit lets the government know that you value your right. The more that exercise that right, the more resistance the government can expect if they ever try to infringe upon it.

I had no problem or "hoops" to jump through as a Michigander. Had to wait a few weeks is all.
