My wife is in Mexico with some friends so I thought I'd try some log hewing. She gets back Friday so I have time to clean the chunks off her car.....🙄 20180227_140829.jpg

While the cat's away the mice will play. You are just whittling on a larger scale.
I took my wife on vacation in Florida back in 2008. I have to go pick her up next week so vacation for me is over.

35 years ago, I bought an adze to build a timber frame house, I was 21 years old! After one log, I decided to build a sawmill! After cutting half the logs, I found out I could buy local cut logs for less than I was doing it for.

Still all fun. Looking good, bet it smells nice as well.

Be very careful if you're there by yourself.

When I was younger, I sometimes thought about hewing beams and selling them to people who wanted to have them exposed in their living rooms. Too late now.

I am by myself and will be careful, thanks. It's my first crack at it so am learning as I go. Cabin fever and bourbon can lead to things like this🙄. I clear cut for our power line at our other property this summer so have a pile of logs. I'm thinking this beam will go over our fireplace.

This winter has been a real one or I'd be doing this outside instead of our garage.

Yep, I'm enjoying my vacation as well. Your wife was on a 10 year vacation?

My poor attempt at some Rodney Dangerfield humor.
Yes, be careful hewing by yourself. Its too easy to miss with one of your swings.

A 70 year old neighbor built his house out of what looks like hand-hewn beams. He had logs cut to square shape and finished them up with a razor sharp adz for that completely hand-made look. Incredible craftsman.

The word rustic is used at our place a lot, it usually involves one of my far from quality jobs and finishes up as designer firewood.

Well, it made me laugh. Thanks. Rodney was a class act.

My hands feel pretty rustic this morning. The felling axe I used to chunk it doesn't fit my hands. Now I have another project whittling down the handle.

If you want to mill them yourself and maintain the "adze surface" it's not that difficult to freehand with a decent sized chainsaw, OR get a mini-mill and finish with the cutting tool of your choice.

Here's a page on adzes.

This guy hand built a 'shop' and has a great YouTube channel showing the work.

If you are so inclined, watching some of his videos will keep you going.

BTW... I definitely 'have the bug'.

I ordered a hewing ax from NORTHMEN which hopefully will get here this summer. Although, it will not be used for a few years, in all likelihood.

But... I will know its available and perhaps I will place a log out in the pasture somewhere to make some chips.
