Which size bush hog?

Do you buy the tractor for the mower or otherwise. I had a 25hp tractor and bought a 5' deck. I traded up to a 40hp and am overpowered. There is a plus side....I can cover ground very quickly. The 5' rough cut mower could be a load for my small tractor, but as had been said before, you can slow down and/or overlap to get through the tough spots.

THAT is an interesting question, probably deserves a thread of it's own!

In my case, the first land we bought (15 ac) came with an old Farmall 404 and a beat up brush mower. I assumed the correct replacement for the tractor (IH dealer couldn't fix the hydraulics) was something of similar size (Kubota M4700 utility tractor). I guess I could have gone to something smaller, but I've never regretted that purchase and I've stayed in the 45-55 hp range, manual tranny for the main tractor.

Now we have 35 ac of pasture and 90 of woods so that's still in the right range I think.

I have a 6' rotary cutter and have been thinking of something bigger (8 or 10' tow behind) but those won't fit on the trails in the woods, so I may stick with the 6'.
