I don't think anybody said you couldn't weld it, I know I didn't, or didn't mean to imply it. I think it is more complicated than the average guy knows.

But, I do have to wonder how far, and how high off the ground you would walk out on a piece of rebar you welded.;)

that's easy.. none.. I don't do heights!

as for riding on welded rebar.. that buddy seat I made.. oh.. on 2002 or so is still holding.. I use it at shows... it's held my wife or a friend up on the rear of the tractor suspended a few feet out and up. Had to make it cuz the shows I go to state tractor can only have as many occupants as it has seats.. no riding on fenders or drawbars.. or running boards etc.. thus many of us have made rear mounted spouse or buddy seats.. :) Mine's holdin fine :) if it does break.. i'll be the first to catch heck over it if my wifes on it :)

I'd also like to re-state that I've never tried to weld rebar to rebar...

The majority of my rebar welding experience has been on pre-cast concrete panels. Take a piece of 3" x 3" x 1/2" thick angle iron and hold it up under the two pieces of #12 bar that are end to end. A splice plate of sorts. Make 4-welds on each bar, 8 welds per angle iron, normally we used Lincoln's NS-3M, 3/32 inch in dia.

Just this summer I lap welded bits of rebar to make 4 ft stakes that I drive into the ground with my post pounder.
Most ended up hitting rocks and deflecting a bit but straightened up nicely.
Pounder weighs about 40 lbs.
Nothing 'unglued'.

I wire lash cedar splits to the re bar rather than pound sharpened cedar posts.
Don't rot and faster for me. I hide the rebar with short splits and wire tight.
Hate digging! , besides this is decorative only.

you know what that reminds me of.. local hardware store sells step in small rebar posts.. look to be 3/8" they have small fins made of folded sheet metal near the base to make an arrow head. they are made by a local guy, then they weld a washer to the top. good to step in around exhibits or small gardens so then you can run wire or twine around them.

had almost forgot about those.

I use a different setup for shows. butter tubs filled with 'crete and a piece of i/2" pvc set in it.. then I can cap with a 'T' with no glue and run my rope thru at shows.. then pack them up and go. that works better than step in for me as occasionally our shows are in parking lots.. thus no step in!!
