There is a program called Isobuster that could well help you get at the files. If it reads the disks, you can copy the files to your computer and re-write the files out again to R or RW disks. I have a feeling I have seen freeware programs that may also do the same job. Or even a Linux computer will often read faulty disks I have found.
I have to say with many HP drives there are compatibility problems. It is not just HP mind but, they seem to have more of a problem when read with other drives, at least in my experience.

at least one of my drives was laundered.. and it was my favorite drive.. it was a usb caddie that held a memory stick, and made it into a usb drive... once thru the wash and the stick died and so did the usb caddy....

alot of sector copiers will help with recovering discs like that.. at least pieces of files anyway..
