When to grease?

   / When to grease? #21
multiple tubes of grease!!!

I run through a tube a month I'd say. One squirt into each zerk as necessary with the lincoln. Doesn't seem to use that much grease.

I see a little grease come out of the joint, I figure its fine. And it makes for less wiping, and I'm afraid of blowing out seals by over greasing. Am I greasing too little?

As an aside, I find if I put too much grease into say the wheels on my mower deck, they don't turn as easily - too much pressure from the grease I'm guessing.

THATS the greasing schedule that I cant begin to understand? I can easily see greasing equipment in mid-day..sure...but if you grease it at the END of the day....why does it need greased at the BEGINNING of the NEXT day?? Someone using it at night that the person isnt aware of or what???

I "get it" if the next time it will be used will be next season, or if it a forgetful duffer who doesn't remember the last time it was used.
Otherwise I think the "after" makes most sense, it becomes part of a walk around inspection for damaged, missing, or loosened parts, etc. and that is probably the best time to fix it, decide to go into town the next day for parts, etc.
Next morning, next week or next season,,, Ooops, didn't know THAT bit had dropped off.

From the sound of it... I think I am going to have to find a PTO driven grease gun and a 3pt 55 gallon grease tank... then drive around my property every 4 hours 7/365 and grease all my implements... he he...

I wonder if I could get my Merry Maid to use a grease gun... hmmmmm...

I can see a shot of grease midday if its being worked really hard...but at the END of the day is when Id do it...that way...next day...next month...whenever..its ALWAYS in the "ready to roll" situation

This is a great topic, I've been trying to caculate a routine for my own individual usage. In the last 25 hours of operation, I've run the loader, brush hog, and a post hole digger. And that loader work includes running mulch around the property .. I doubt I have a full 10 hours on anything.

For me, I think an after use grease of what was 'used' is the best way. If I spend the afternoon cleaning some brush out with the rotary, I'll grease the 3pt arms and mower wheel. No reason to grease the loader as I haven't used it.

For what it's worth. My Father-in-Law is a union heavy equipment operator - He has been for ~20 years. The routine is simple. They grease every morning. In the evening, before they quit for the day, they knock the big dirt / mud off.

Interested to see what others do.
