when is transmission full

how do i tell when the transmission is full
i own a lb1914 with a 8-8 manual transmission
there is a red cap that unscrews but i don't know when it is full
when i remove the cap i see the fluid just over the top of the gears. is this correct. i have ordered a service manual but have yet to recieve it,

There is a sight glass on the side of the transmission I think it is on the passenger side right under the floor board.
