I guess I'm fortunate as it seems a fair number of the guys working in the electrical and plumbing departments at my local HD are retired contractors or at least have some experience. For the other departments I really ever need assistance. I like using the internet for ideas/advice before going to the store anyways if I don't know exactly what I am doing. Better to get several opinions/options than just one.

We have a new kid in town here in central NY called "Runnings" they do not carry lumber but they have just about everything else. A combination of Bass Pro, Tractor Supply and Lowes, what is not to like!

Al

Around here it is Big R. Not too many around but they sure are nice.

I went to one of the big boxes yesterday for a paint match on a piece of aluminum gutter. They couldn't do it. The gutter is yellow. The paint match kept coming up dark green. I kept asking the guy to put a flat spot of the sample on the "eye" but he kept putting it on the seam. Three times! Finally I just took the gutter, walked over to the paint chip cards, ran it past them till I found a match and asked him to give me this one.

I'm not kidding, most of our big boxes are worthless when it comes to getting someone with experience to help you. Once in a great while, if you are lucky, you get the last guy in town that used to have his own store before they ran him out of business and came there to finish out to his retirement.

Sad to hear... our HD paint guy has been around at least 8 years and he knows his paint!

So has this kid and he doesn't.

There was some lady in there getting paint for something and they hand her the can with the fingerprint of paint on top and she says its too dark. So he tells the other kid to put some white in it. The kid says "White?" He says yes, white. So the kid puts some white in it, mixed it again, hands it to the lady again and its the exact same color as before he added white. They repeated several times and it never changed.

I know what you mean. One HD I go to for paint has lady who is absolutely excellent. Another store doesn't have anybody that knows anything. When they start to read the can I leave.
