What\'s this bolt for???

John Deere 4120 - there's a small bolt that sticks out of the front axle - sticks out in the front of the tractor, on the axle. It has a nut on it as well as if you're to adjust the bolt to a certain length and then tighten the nut so the bolt stays put. Well, it was loose so I went ahead and tightened the nut, but I'm not sure what it's for. I'll look in the manual tomorrow and hope I see what it is. It wasn't obvious though to me.

It's been discussed before, and is an adjustment for the pivot mechanism of the MFWD front axle.
I found mine loose too, and just finger tightened it, and locked it at that location with the locknut.
I haven't found reference (other than listed on the schematics) to any adjustment of this bolt (think it takes up slack so I wouldn't tighten it more than finger snug).

You might ask a Deere mechanic what to do with it. Mine said just finger tight.

Thanks. I was planning on asking him about it when he comes to fix the heavy white smoke at startup problem.

By the way, I saw another problem yesterday. At least 2 of the rubber boots on the steering linkage (like tie rod ends or whatever) are totally shot with only 40 hours on the tractor. It looks like defective rubber to me because it's really crackes bad in several places and looks like it's been on the tractor for 10 years instead of 10 months! 2 are definitely bad and at least 1 other is questionable. Guess he'll have to order those too /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I'll show him when he arrives. I wonder if anyone else has this problem???
