Around here, you can't swing a dead cat with hitting a Dollar General store.At last count, there were about 30 of them in my county, five within a five mile radius.

I think they even sell dead cats there.

Might be related to being a survey reference point of some sort.

In my area they use what is solid bed rock and affix a brass plate, Sort of 'X' marks the spot for reference.

Years ago I helped a guy who purchased some storage units.
I sent one of my crews over to clean out the units he foreclosed on. In over half of the delinquent units there was a mattress that you or I wouldnt have let our dogs sleep on.
In all, the value of the contents of most units could have been bought again new with what they paid for the months rent.
Didnt make sense to me.

I've talked to storage building owners who tell me the same thing; the items aren't worth the rent people pay him. Once in a while though, somebody defaults and leaves the owner with something different...

I never could get anybody to come out for unit auctions while I was helping.
Everybody knew there was nothing but junk in the units. Owner said I could have whatever I found if no bid on unit.
Had one unit that the lady had been an actress on various shows and the one I remember was Dynasty. She had lots of pics with her and other actors- actresses. Worth nothing monetarily wise but priceless for her.
I called her and told her to come get the stuff. Saved me a trip to the dump.

A recent trend is 'on line storage bidding'.

So far it has worked out well for the storage trade.
Generally 7 day listings by city and location.
Great as you can save pics, enlarge them and come back later to adjust the bids if U really want the goods.
On site bidding only lets U have a limited viewing and there is all that travel time to consider while 'on line' has as much as a week to prepare and possibly even pre sell some goods.

Friend had listed a locker but the delinquent renter got wise and broke in and 'stole back' his own goods the night before the winning bidder came to collect his win.
Police got involved (reluctantly as minor crime) but got exited once they identified the renter.
Still an ongoing investigation.
